NPS Paleontology Program
T he principal mission of the National Park Service is the preservation and protection of its natural and historic resources in a manner and by means that will leave them unimpaired for future generations. The preservation of fossils and the natural geologic processes are included in this mission. Indeed, the diversity of the fossil record in the National Park System is great. Petrified leaves, wood, pollen, shells, bones, teeth, eggshells, tracks, borrows, and coprolites have been found in more than 145 National Park System units. Collectively, these fossils provide a comprehensive history of life in the areas that are now national parks from the Precambrian stromatolites in Glacier National Park to mammal bones from the Ice Age throughout the Alaskan parks. PREFACE
Greetings from Michael Sternberg . I am an avocational paleontologist with a keen interest in the geologic history of the Northwest. This site is the product of my continuing research and study in the attempt to understand the lands around me. Recognizing that there are others in my situation, far from university resources and academic contact, I present this material as an attempt to make geology more accessible for the public. I am solely responsible for the content and any errors. I wish to thank all the professionals who have in kind and generous manner provided information and clarification. The purpose of this website is to provide information on the geology and paleontology of the Northwest United States and Coastal Western Canada. To this end, both popular texts and professional papers have been used. To ensure accuracy of information presented here, the author solicits additional references and citations from all visitors. Due to the complexity of Northwest Geology, and the extent of the geographical area covered, this work can not pretend to cover all aspects of the geological history of the region. In addition, other topics of interest to the avocational geologist/paleontologist are on hand. It is necessary to divide the region into discrete provinces due to the variety of causative forces at work in the past and simply because there's a lot of ground to cover. This site is dynamic and evolving. Please return periodically to view new and expanded coverage.

This is an informal and incomplete guide to the history of evolutionary biology from about 1800 to about 1950. It is maintained by John Alroy . Its main emphases are on the late 19th century and on paleontology. However, I hope to see the coverage become more comprehensive in the near future. If you have any comments or suggestions or wish to contribute to the site, I strongly encourage you to do so; please write me . The only limits on contributions are that they must follow the site's format and carry your byline. Contributors to date include Mark Largent. New York State provides a rich and varied assemblage of fossil-bearing deposits which have drawn the attention of both professional and amateur paleontologists for over 100 years. The strata representing the Devonian Period are especially well represented. Fossiliferous Ordivician and Silurian strata, and, to a lesser extent, Upper Cambrian strata, are also present in the State. In addition, New York State contains numerous deposits which were lain down at the close of the last Pleistocene glaciation, many containing plant and animal fossils. • Paleontology in the News
This is a selection of stories, subject to the following rules. First, I don't guarantee close daily coverage of everything that happens (because I have things to do apart from maintaining this Web page). Second, the site has to be generally accessible. (Many journals, like Science and Nature , make new papers accessible only to people or institutions who have paid a subscription to the written version.) Third, I choose newspapers and news sites that tend to keep their pages accessible for more than two weeks over those that do not. Fourth, I keep older articles archived for varying lengths of time, depending how important I think they are (or interesting, at least); whether they have been updated or made redundant; and whether the site has dropped them. For example, I've had to give up on the New York Times . It is a fine paper, but its new policy is to take off its stories within DAYS and then charge for access to them.
