Abstract
Sediments of middle and late Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene, and Pliocene ages were not recovered in the Santee Coastal Reserve core. The upper 42.0 ft of sediments represent Quaternary deposits and are included in the Wando Formation (42.0-28.0 ft) and the informal Silver Bluff beds (28.0-0 ft). This report is preliminary and has not been reviewed for conformity with U.S. Geological Survey editorial standards or with the North American Stratigraphic Code. Paleontology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A paleontologist carefully chips rock from a column of dinosaur vertebrae. Paleontology (the American spelling; the British spelling is palaeontology ) is the study of the developing history of life on earth, of ancient plants and animals based on the fossil record , evidence of their existence preserved in rocks . This includes the study of body fossils , tracks, burrows, cast off parts, fossilized feces coprolites "), and chemical residues.

Overview
Modern paleontology sets ancient life in its contexts, by studying how long-term physical changes of global geography (" paleogeography ") and climate (" paleoclimate ") have affected the evolution of life, how ecosystems have responded to these changes and have changed the planetary environment in turn, and how these mutual responses have affected today's patterns of biodiversity . So paleontology overlaps with geology , the study of rocks and rock formations, and with botany biology zoology , and ecology , fields concerned with living creatures and how they interact.

http://www.ibiblio.org/expo/paleo.exhibit/paleo.html
Paleontology is a rich field, imbued with a long and interesting past and an even more intriguing and hopeful future. Many people think Paleontology is the study of fossils. Paleontology is much more. It is the study of what fossils tell us about the ecologies of the past, about evolution, and about our place, as humans, in the world. Paleontology incorporates knowledge from biology, geology, ecology, anthropology, archaeology, and even computer science to understand the processes that have led to the origination and eventual destruction of the different types of animals since life arose. The exhibits that we have set up here are created by Paleontogists. More than just an overview of the diversity that has existed through time on this planet, the exhibits also highlite some of the research Paleontologists are conducting at the Museum of Paleontology. The exhibit might be visualized as starting at the center of a museum with halls spreading in each direction. Off the main hallway, many a smaller branch spread. Unlike normal hallways, the hallways you are following are actually the path that evolution is supposed to have taken. These halls are called scientifically cladograms and they show explicitly the ancestor and decendent relationships among lineages or groups of animals. Reconstructing this pattern of ancestry and descent is one of the many important areas where fossil information proves vital. This hypermedia presentation is being prepared by Robert Guralnick Tony Fiorillo,

I am a 25-year old Cambridge graduate currently
based in London. I work for the Asylum and

and we are getting married on 15 July 2006. For
further details about the wedding please see our
wedding planning website: http://www.weddingpath.com/paulandjulia/index.html Although I had to take an unscheduled break from my postgraduate studies in the USA (buy me a beer and I'll tell you all about it!), I hope to start my PhD again in the UK. I am particularly interested in the applications of geometric morphometrics to vertebrate fossils, especially dinosaurs. Sauropod dinosaurs have been my passion since I began work on Cetiosauriscus stewarti , and I want to use the most modern computer-based techniques available to study them. Nothing like them has been seen on the Earth before and since - so I want to know why they did what they did with their necks and tails, and how they coped with life on land when they were approaching the size of a blue whale!

Godwin Institute of Quaternary Research (GIQR)
The Quaternary, the last 2.6 million years of geological time, saw major climatic changes which caused ice sheets to advance into temperate latitudes. Repeated glacial episodes caused significant fluctuations in sea level, major geographical changes and major plant and animal population migrations. Sedimentary sequences record these changes in great detail and are central to unravelling past events. The GIQR is a semi-informal research group of approximately 60 people within the University of Cambridge . Its constituent research groups are based in the Departments of Geography Plant Sciences Earth Sciences Archaeology and Zoology . Links also exist with the Department of Physics and the Scott Polar Research Institute . There is an excellent research environment at all levels, fostered by the staff (10 members), post-doctoral workers, and both Ph.D. and M.Phil. students pursuing interdisciplinary research in a wide range of Quaternary fields. This environment is unique in Britain, offering opportunities for research student training unequalled elsewhere, in terms of the range and quality of the expertise available.

I Want To Be A Paleontologist !
Advice for Students and Parents
Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, NY There is no luckier person than the person who can make their passion their career. Most professional paleontologists are just such lucky people. They are people consumed with a passion to understand the history of life on earth. Paleontology is fun, thrilling, and fascinating, but it is also hard work. It is not "easier" than the more traditional "core" science disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, or geology. In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences.
What is paleontology?
What background do I need in high school?
The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology.

60. Strange Science: Timeline
Timeline of important events in paleontology and biology.
http://www.strangescience.net/timeline.htm
This (by no means comprehensive!) list chronicles some of the major events in the history of paleontology and biology. Other significant events appear in purple type. 610-425 BC-Philosophers Thales, Anaximander, Pythagoras, Xenophanes and Herodotus propose that marine fossils found inland lived in the sea, and that the now dry land was once underwater. This correct supposition will be forgotten for centuries. c.400 BC-Herodotus relates the griffin myth. (The myth is probably inspired by Protoceratops and Psittacosaurus remains.) c.78-Pliny the Elder publishes a 37-volume natural history encyclopedia. Containing both accurate and inaccurate information, it will become the basis of many scientific disciplines. 150-The physician Galen travels from Turkey to Alexandria to study anatomy. Galen will establish the concept of humors (phlegm, blood, black bile and yellow bile) that determine both health and personality. Belief in these four humors will dominate medicine and biology for many centuries. c.180-Pausanias records a description of the skeleton of the hero Ajax. (It is probably a fossil mastodon or rhinoceros.)
