Aachenosaurus is a fossil that was originally thought to be jaw fragments from a duckbilled dinosaur (a hadrosaur), but the fossil turned out to be petrified wood. Aachenosaurus was named by the scientist Abbey G. Smets in 1888 (the type species was called A. multidens ). The fossil's name means "Aachen lizard," named for the Aachenian deposits of Moresnet (which was a territory in Belgium) where the fossils were found. ABAVORNIS Abavornis (which means ""great-great-grandfather bird") was a primitive bird that lived during the late Cretaceous period , about 85 million years ago. Fossils were found in the Bissekty Formation, Uzbekistan. The type species is

Our first showing during 2002 in Woodland Park, Colorado, saw over 10,000 visitors, in one week, tour the exhibition with fabulous results. Every comment in our guest book expressed superlative impressions of the exhibit. We provide a diverse array of specimens, touch stations, display cubes, and a complete set of signage to educate and entertain your visitors. The exhibit is scalable from 1,500 (142m2) to 5,500 (520m2) square feet and includes both real and cast specimens. You choose which components you like and we’ll help you design the exhibit to your specifications. The best way to appreciate the exhibit is by seeing it in person! Welcome to the
Phylogeny Wing
These exhibits explore the ancestor/descendant relationships which connect all organisms, past and present. Here are four ways to get started: phylogeny of life on Earth. Wondering what in the world "phylogeny" means, and how it relates to paleontology? Read an introduction to phylogeny Read tips on navigating the Phylogeny Wing Use our Web Lift to Taxa to look for a particular group of organisms. Visit the UCMP Special Exhibit Journey into Phylogenetic Systematics to find out how biologists reconstruct the pattern of events that led to the diversity of life, and learn why this is so important.

Paleontology at the
U.S. Geological Survey
Welcome to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Paleontology Home Page! Paleontology , the science which uses fossils to study life in past geologic time , has served an important role in geologic studies at the USGS since its establishment in 1879. As early as 1882, paleontologists like Othniel C. Marsh and Charles A. White, were making expeditions to the West , and returning with massive numbers of fossil specimens to be labeled, named, and described. In recent years, many of the paleontologic studies at the USGS have moved beyond the early collection, observation, and description endeavors. Today, USGS paleontologists are using the knowledge they gain in their study of fossils to answer important questions such as: (1) what was the world like in the past, (2) what were the forces that made the world change, and (3) how could these forces impact the world in our lifetime and that of future generations. Paleontologic tools also have changed significantly over the years. Scanning electron microscopes , ship-mounted drilling rigs, and computers are a far cry from the picks and hammers of early days, although these tools still are an essential part of every paleontologist's field kit.
