pedofacies, alluvial fans, braided river, ephemeral floodplain lakes, tectosedimentary megacycles, paleogeography and paleoclimatology
http://www.geologie.uni-freiburg.de/root/people/studis/dreiklua/diss/engl.htm
Abstract
, 10, XXVI + 473 S. Fig. 1 Aerial photographs, microfacies analysis, paleosols, paleolakes and tectosedimentary megacycles were used to correlate the outcrop sections, build a three-dimensional depositional model and reconstruct the facies changes and the paleogeographic evolution of the area under study. These results, in turn, allowed the analysis of the tectonic development of the southern Basco-Cantabrian Basin (uplift, subsidence, halokinesis, reactivated basement faults). Twenty-two different types of lithofacies were identified and combined in eleven facies associations (FA):
  • FA I: basal braided river association
  • FA II: basal lake association
  • FA III: marginal diapir (fan-delta) association
  • FA IV: pedogenic superimposed flood plain association
  • FA V: alluvial fan association
  • FA VI: basin center association
  • FA VII: braided river association
  • FA VIII: lake-calcrete association
  • FA IX: upper lake association
  • FA X: discordant gastropod-limestone association
  • FA XI: discordant upper conglomerate association.
The paleogeographic reconstruction suggested the presence of four tectonic stages (Fig. 2): In the Middle Eocene subduction in the Biscaya area ended in a continent-continent collision between Europe and the Iberian Peninsula. The tropical Ilerdian-sea retreated to the northwest, resulting in the formation of an early local braided plain (

The Jeremy Project
Explore the Arctic Circle! On August 23 - 25 the Jeremy Project will be at the site of the Bering Land Bridge exploring this amazing paleontological site. As part of the "Jeremy Project," scientists will be using NASA's Pathfinder technology in an attempt to locate and record an underwater paleontological site just north of Point Hope, Alaska. TROV will be deployed once again in an effort to locate and provide images, by way of its stereo cameras, of what is believed to be an assembly of bones, the remains of a large extinct mammal dating back earlier than ten thousand years ago. What type of mammal this animal was for sure is yet to be determined, though it is thought to be either a mastodon or mammoth, both large quadrupeds resembling modern elephants. TROV's film and photographs will help to determine this. Extensive maps of the skeleton assemblage, as well as the surrounding area, will be produced for scientific study. Some of the Commissions were founded at a time when the geological field represented was new or needed support. The Committee questioned whether a commission should continue under the auspices of IUGS when the geology that it encompassed appeared to progress independently of IUGS.
