    Sedimentology and Sedimentary Petrology
After taking his B.A. degree at Harvard, John Hubert received his M.S. at the University of Colorado and Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University. Before coming to the University of Massachusetts in 1970, Hubert taught at the University of Missouri at Columbia for 12 years, progressing from Assistant Professor to Professor. Over the years, Hubert has published papers individually and with students on the paleoenvironments and petrology of sands and sandstones deposited in flysch basins, deltas, rivers, lakes, eolian dunes, alluvial fans, on shorelines, and in the deep ocean. He is now concentrating on the sequences and sedimentary petrology of terrestrial rocks and their modern analogs. His current research focuses on the fluvial, playa, and alluvial-fan redbeds and lacustrine gray strata of Triassic-Jurassic age in the Deerfield, Fundy, Hartford, and Newark rift basins of the eastern United States and Nova Scotia. Another current project is the paleogeography and paleoclimatology of the dinosaur-rich Morrison Formation of Jurassic age, Colorado-Utah. These studies emphasize sedimentary structures and sequences, petrology of the light and heavy minerals, diagenesis, and regional paleogeography.

He is also involved in research on the basal Cambrian depositional systems and deep water processes in a number of areas, including work on the Tapeats Sandstone in the Grand Canyon region. His paleocurrent work takes him to far-flung areas of the globe in search of new sources of data. Current Research Chadwick is currently working with Elaine Kennedy of the Geoscience Research Institute and Chris Prince of Petrographics, Inc. on the Tapeats Sandstone depositional system in the Grand Canyon and central Arizona. In addition, he is working with Darryl Maddox of Amarillo CC on the Permotriassic of Palo Duro Canyon, and Tom Zoutwelle of The Netherlands, on the global patterns of paleocurrents in the Phanerozoic. Your browser does not support javascript Conversations: Last Word on Kennewick Man? Volume 55 Number 6, November/December 2002 A court ruling on the controversial remains pleases archaeologist James Chatters. On August 30, Judge John Jelderks of the U.S. District Court of Oregon ruled against the government's 1996 decision that declared the 9,400-year-old skeleton known as Kennewick Man to be Native American, a classification which would require the remains to be turned over to a coalition of tribes for reburial. James Chatters, archaeologist and author of Ancient Encounters: Kennewick Man and the First Americans (New York: Simon and Schuster, 2001), identified the remains when they were found on the banks of Washington's Columbia River in 1996. He talked with ARCHAEOLOGY about the recent ruling and the larger issues raised by Kennewick Man. What's your reaction to Judge Jelderks' ruling on Kennewick Man? I experienced a tremendous feeling of relief, followed by a sense of validation that taking a stand for science and advocacy for Kennewick Man had been the right thing to do. The decision validated all that the plaintiffs [eight scientists who wished to study the remains], attorneys, and I have gone through for the past six years. I quickly read the entire 75 page opinion, footnotes and all, and found that most of the central points we have been making, including some I began making the day the bones were taken from my lab (6 years to the hour before the decision) were among the judge's central conclusions. I felt vindicated.

Message from the Chairman Part I and II of the SDS publication on World-wide correlation with Devonian GSSPs will be published in a Courier volume of the Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg near the turn of the year 1999/2000. In part I the formerly established seven Devonian GSSPs and the Devonian-Carboniferous boundary GSSP are reviewed, updated and discussed. The twenty-four contributions of part II deal with the recognition of Devonian Series and Stage boundaries in England, Wales and Scotland, the Ardennes, Germany, France, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, the Baltic area, Greenland and Svalbard, the Moroccan Meseta and Anti-Atlas, the East European (Russian) Platform, Belarus, the southern Transcaucasus, the Urals, the East Siberian Platform, Severnoya Zemlya, Novaya Zemlya, western Siberia, Mongolia, the Russian Far East, the South Tien Shan, northeastern Asia, south China, eastern Australia and the Appalachian Basin. Part III on "Fossil Groups important for boundary definition" will be published next year. Manuscripts for these SDS publications started to come in from the end of 1995 on, but until June 1998 a number of relevant contributions were still missing.
