This interactive exercise explores animal adaptations. One such adaptation is protective coloration. Fish species use animal adaptations to take on the color, shade and even texture of their immediate surroundings to camouflage or conceal themselves from predators and prey. Try and match each fish species animal adaptations to their natural sea environment? The Internet Campus is an interactive multimedia science learning web site of:

Seafriends - Oceanography index
Oceanography is the science that studies the world's oceans, its waters and depths, how they move and how they play a part in the whole of our planet. In this section you can learn more about the sea and how it affects life. The sea is not just a big bucket of salty water, but a living system that controls many aspects of this planet, and thus your life too. This section forms the basis for understanding how our planet works.
introduction
Oceanography covers all we know about the sea, its formation, geology, mineralogy, extraction, fisheries, biology and much more. For this web site we have made a conscious selection. If you are in a hurry, read this first. (located on this page) (3 pages) oceans The world's oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth's surface. At places they are as deep as the tallest mountains. Read more about their size, surface distribution, origin, evolution, features, crust, tectonic plate movement and more. (14 pages) ocean properties The salt water has important properties for life in the seas, properties that influence the circulation of the ocean water. Read more about its temperature, seasons, density and productivity. (8 pages) waves Waves are caused by the wind blowing over the ocean's surface. They promote the exchange of gases between the ocean and the atmosphere and bring water movement to coastal habitats. They are responsible for the shape of our coasts and the formation of dunes and beaches. Waves can also destroy. Tsunamis and mega tsunamis are special waves. In this chapter you'll find all you need to know about waves. (14 pages)

View full profile … The world’s oceans are in constant motion. A complex web of currents steered by winds and the rotation of the earth carry warm water from the equator towards the poles and cold water back towards the equator. By redistributing heat around the world, these currents profoundly affect our climate. For example, warm-water currents such as the Gulf Stream are responsible for the relatively mild temperatures in northern Europe. The interaction between currents and climate is receiving a lot of attention, especially given the prospect of global warming due the buildup of greenhouse gases. Scientists are focusing on how a possible warming of the air and water might affect ocean circulation and how shifts in the currents will in turn impact the global climate. Some researchers have even speculated that global warming could trigger the shutdown of the currents carrying warm water north, plunging northern Europe into a deep freeze. To make confident predictions, however, scientists still need to work on the basics. While satellites have tracked the warm-water currents at the surface of the oceans, scientists are only gradually piecing together the complicated networks of cold deepwater currents. Amy Bower is one of the scientists working on this puzzle, one small piece at a time. Circulation in the northwest Atlantic at the depth of the Labrador Sea Water. Arrows indicate mean currents. Blue is cold water. Red is warm water.

While ocean observations remain one of our principal missions, we have increasingly developed modeling expertise, both analytical and numerical, to support seagoing science and to better understand fundamental ocean processes. The seagoing groups have evolved into a number of technical and scientific groups having specialized equipment. Below we present some of our specialized research working groups:
The following list contains the present groups in our department:
This is a joint PO/AOPE entity which services the entire Institution and a large number of outside users, locally, nationally, and internationally. It is based largely in the Village, but uses the Clark South high bay for staging.
Upper Ocean Processes (UOP)
The primary focus of the Upper Ocean Processes Group is the study of physical processes in the upper ocean and at the air-sea interface using moored surface buoys equipped with meteorological and oceanographic sensors.

OCEANOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT HUMBOLDT STATE UNIVERSITY
Humboldt State University is the only campus in the California State University system to offer an undergraduate major in oceanography. The university is noted for its friendly atmosphere and proximity to Redwood National Park. The program is supported by a diverse faculty, a marine laboratory in the nearby town of Trinidad, and the 90-foot long research vessel, R/V Coral Sea. The university prides itself on being a student-centered institution and learning is given the highest priority here. This philosophy makes it an exciting and engaging place to work and to study. At the same time, research is a fundamental component of the field of oceanography. We work to provide an effective classroom experience and to involve students in research programs in the coastal ocean, as well as local estuaries and lagoons. Our program is strong, challenging, broadening, and full of opportunities for hands-on experience. Check us out! UPDATE: THE INDIAN OCEAN TSUNAMI, DECEMBER 26, 2004 As many of you know, the tsunami of December 26, 2004 caused widespread destruction and a huge loss of life in several countries bordering the Indian Ocean.
