Graphic by: Steven E. Hall The Online Meteorology Guide is a collection of web-based instructional modules that use multimedia technology and the dynamic capabilities of the web. These resources incorporate text, colorful diagrams, animations, computer simulations, audio and video to introduce fundamental concepts in the atmospheric sciences. Selected pages link to (or will soon link to) relevant classroom activities and current weather products to reinforce topics discussed in the modules and allow the user to apply what has been learned to real-time weather data. Available modules include: Modules

NWA Meteorology
Northwest Airlines Meteorology is known throughout the airline industry for excellence in turbulence forecasting. We provide flight crews, dispatchers, planners and ground crews with the information needed to keep the passengers and crew informed and safe from various weather hazards. Through our innovative TP (Turbulence Plot) Program, information about clear air turbulence, wind shears, thunderstorms, mountain waves and volcanic ash is uplinked directly to the cockpit by Northwest Airlines meteorologists 24 hours a day every day of the year. Meteorologists prepare upper air weather depictions that forecast possible areas of clear air turbulence and mountain wave activity. This gives the flight crews and dispatchers the extra time necessary to reroute traffic around these weather hazards, which are often difficult or impossible to see while in flight. Surface depictions are also prepared and updated throughout the day showing the position of fronts and forecasting possible thunderstorm activity.

Hurricanes are cyclones that develop over the warm tropical oceans and have sustained winds in excess of 64 knots (74 miles/hour). These storms are capable of producing dangerous winds, torrential rains and flooding, all of which may result in tremendous property damage and loss of life in coastal populations. One memorable storm was Hurricane Andrew (pictured above), which was responsible for at least 50 deaths and more than $30 billion in property damage. The purpose of this module is to introduce hurricanes and their associated features, to show where hurricanes develop, and to explain the atmospheric conditions necessary for hurricane development. The Hurricane module has been organized into the following sections: Sections
Last Update: 09/16/99 Definition and Growth
Defines a hurricane and shows the regions and mechanics of hurricane development. Stages of Development
