Global Environmental Change During the first year of study, students enrolled in the program of Global Environmental Change will work with a faculty member on course selection and in determining an area of study for the Master’s Project. By the end of the first year, the student will choose an advisor who will work with the student on developing a project, as well as advising on courses to be taken during the second year. In the second year, the student will complete the course requirements and devote time to the completion of the Master’s Project. A paper and presentation will be made at the end of the second semester of the second year. This program relies largely on faculty and courses taught at the Durham campus, but it is possible for a student to take appropriate classes for one semester (fall) at the

The work will foster the integration of ecological and genetic approaches to understanding evolution and biodiversity. Refocusing Disaster Aid By spending part of their aid before disaster strikes, the international donor community can help the poor to better cope with extreme events. Support for novel instruments that transfer catastrophe risk to global markets could pair with preventive measures to complement post-disaster humanitarian relief. In the August 12th issue of Science , three scientists from IIASA's Risk Program propound the benefits of such a strategy. Go to article Information Technology and the Forest Sector The world's forest sector must do more to reap the benefits of the digital age. So concludes a recent study by IIASA's Forestry Program together with the International Union of Forest Research Organisations and the Finnish Forest Research Institute . Information technologies could enhance forest viability, although at the same time, they could force production and consumption of forest products to the southern hemisphere.

The number of species of plants, animals, micro organisms, the enormous diversity of genes in these species, the different ecosystems on the planet, such as deserts, rainforests and coral reefs are all part of a biologically diverse Earth. Appropriate conservation and sustainable development strategies attempt to recognize this as being integral to any approach. Almost all cultures have in some way or form recognized the importance that nature, and its biological diversity has had upon them and the need to maintain it. Yet, power, greed and politics have affected the precarious balance.
