Global environmental change Large-scale and global environmental hazards to human health include climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity, changes in hydrological systems and the supplies of freshwater, land degradation and stresses on food-producing systems. Appreciation of this scale and type of influence on human health requires a new perspective which focuses on ecosystems and on the recognition that the foundations of long-term good health in populations rely in great part on the continued stability and functioning of the biosphere's life-supporting systems. It also brings an appreciation of the complexity of the systems upon which we depend. Further information Climate change and health

Global environmental change Large-scale and global environmental hazards to human health include climate change, stratospheric ozone depletion, loss of biodiversity, changes in hydrological systems and the supplies of freshwater, land degradation and stresses on food-producing systems. These processes influence the risks of vector-borne diseases, water and food-borne diarrhoea, and malnutrition, which are among the major burdens of disease in the developing world, and are disproportionately concentrated on children. In addition, as environmental degradation acts over a long-term and is potentially irreversible, children have the most to gain from measures to safeguard the integrity of natural ecosystems. HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE Welcome to CIESIN's Thematic Guides on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change. Thematic Guides offer overviews of some of the key topics and issues that pertain to human interactions in the environment and global change. The primary objective of the Thematic Guides is to provide a tool that allows researchers, policy makers, educators, and the public to quickly access background materials on key global change issues, and to locate key data sets and information resources. The guides are also designed to complement data-access tools like the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) Catalog Search Tool by providing context and background information. Newer guides (released after 2001) provide extensive bibliographies of references and related resources, including online articles, reports, research project summaries and data sets, as well as many print publications. The bibliographies are dynamically linked to sections within the guides and are fully searchable (visit the search page). We provide here as well a collection of archived guides, which provide in-text hyperlinks to hundreds of journal articles, book chapters, government reports, maps and images, and other relevant materials.

            Overview
The objectives of this course are to gain a basic understanding of the interrelationships among the earth's major physical and biological systems and to gain an appreciation of past and potential future global environmental changes. The role of humans in propagating and mitigating global change will also be examined. We will discuss changes in the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere, and the impacts of human actions. Aspects of the forecasted global warming as well as other important issues will be discussed in detail.

    Description
Global Environmental Change: Human and Policy Dimensions is an international, interdisciplinary journal spanning the social and natural sciences. It publishes high-quality original theoretical and applied research and review articles across the entire field of global environmental change. Areas include biodiversity and ecosystem services, water resources, climate change, international agreements, North-South relations, land use and cover change, institutions and governance. The journal interprets global environmental change to mean the outcome of processes that are manifest in localities, but with consequences at multiple spatial, temporal and socio-political scales. The journal addresses issues of public policy, economics, equity, risk, and resilience, science policy, international development, and health and well-being.
