128. Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873)
Biography and description of the work of one of the founders of geology as a science in England.
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/sedgwick.html
Adam Sedgwick (1785-1873)
Like every other branch of natural science founded on observation, we observe that the great mixed masses of the earth's crust are arranged in natural groups, and that the groups succeed in regular order. In describing each group, we follow the methods of natural history, whether we describe the animal species or their organic content. I cannot promise to teach you all geology, I can only fire your imaginations. Adam Sedgwick. Two undated fragments of his public lecture notes. Adam Sedgwick was born on March 22, 1785, the third of seven chidren of an Anglican vicar, in Dent, Yorkshire, England. His home life was happy; like so many geologists, young Adam spent time rambling through the countryside, looking at and collecting rocks and fossils. Despite his family's modest means, Sedgwick attended nearby Sedbergh School, and then entered Trinity College at Cambridge University, as a "sizar" a type of scholarship student. In 1810 he was made a Fellow which at that time referred to an unmarried member of the board of governors of a college, often responsible for teaching. As he described it in a letter, working conditions were also not unlike those faced by many a academic supervisor since: Here I am grinding away with six pupils. Under such circumstances it is impossible to advance one step. But I am compelled by circumstances to undergo this drudgery. When I look back on what I have done since I was elected Fellow I cannot discover that I have made any proficiency whatever, or gained one new idea.

The New York Times , on its next-to-last day as a free Web site, has published an editorial commenting on a new giant sculpturea barge full of rocks and trees, an artificial island, to be towed around Manhattan Island for the next week. How remarkable that Earth Art , a movement whose greatest works are in the western desert, has made itself at home in America's greatest city. But then it was Manhattan's poet Walt Whitman who observed 150 years ago, "Here at last is something in the doings of man that corresponds with the broadcast doings of the day and night."

Is a Penny Really Hardness 3?
They say never to accept received wisdom without testing it first. Now, through experiment, I've found that's trueI tested the Mohs scale of mineral hardness and found it wanting. Well, not exactly: I found that an adjunct of the Mohs scale is wrong. They say a penny is hardness 3, the same as calcite. I could not confirm that

The Quaternary Period
The Quaternary Period includes the last 1.8 million years. One of the most significant aspects of this period is the expansion of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets collectively known as the "Ice Age". Evidence from the deep oceans indicate that there have been over two dozen cold (glacials) and warm (interglacial) periods during the last 2.4 million years. The most recent glaciation began about 125,000 years ago and climaxed about 21,000 years ago. At this time, over 30 percent of earth's surface was covered by ice, and sea level was at least 125 meters lower than present.

If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.
I have divided my Science page into the following subjects for your convenience:
