about Geology Print page Geology is the study of the physical processes and history of the solid Earth. The science seeks an understanding of such diverse and important phenomena as earth's internal structure, plate tectonics, earthquakes, mountain building, volcanic eruptions, the origin and evolution of life, the extinction of the dinosaurs, the formation of sedimentary basins, climate and sea level change, glaciation, and landscape evolution. Also, the origin and conservation of the Earth's natural resources, such as minerals, fossil fuels, soils and water. Teaching and Research in Geology at Victoria University take advantage of Wellington's dynamic setting, its association with Victoria's Institute of Geophysics, and its long and continuing tradition of Antarctic Research. Despite its small size, VUW's geology group is internationally respected for its recent contributions to such fields as past climate change in NZ and Antarctica, volcanology, and tectonics. In the modern world, understanding of geological processes is becoming increasingly important for those concerned with the extraction and preservation of the Earth's natural resources, the evaluation of natural hazards, anticipating the social and environmental effects of global change, and undertaking environmental and resource planning and monitoring.

Maine Geological Survey
Aquifer Fact Sheet
GROUND WATER
Subsurface water that fills the spaces between particles of rock and soil is called ground water. Approximately 90% of the rural population in Maine obtains their water from wells, and ground water is also a significant source for municipal and industrial water supplies.
TYPES OF AQUIFERS
An aquifer is a subsurface water supply which yields useful quantities of ground water to wells and springs. There are two types of aquifers in Maine: surficial materials and fractured bedrock. In unconsolidated surficial deposits the water fills the pore spaces between the rock fragments that make up the deposits. Coarse-grained surficial materials such as sand and gravel are capable of transmitting large quantities of ground water and are generally the most productive ground water resources in the State. Maine's bedrock has been metamorphosed and recrystallized, and the original porosity between mineral grains has been eliminated. In a bedrock aquifer, ground water is stored in fractures in the rock, and areas with a large number of fractures may contain significant amounts of water. Where coarse-grained surficial deposits are thin or absent, wells drilled into bedrock aquifers provide the only alternative for most domestic water supplies.
USES OF AQUIFER INFORMATION
When deciding where to locate a domestic or municipal well, aquifer information is very important. Information such as high yield zones and the location of sand and gravel aquifers can influence where a well driller locates a well, and what type of well he constructs. A knowledge of aquifers and their recharge areas is also critical when siting possible sources of pollution such as landfills, salt piles, and hazardous wastes. Aquifer maps and texts from the Maine Geological Survey contain information on aquifer favorability and vulnerability and are widely used by local and state officials in making environmentally sound siting decisions, and by well drillers, developers, and geological consultants as a base for detailed hydrogeological studies.

90. James Hutton: Theology And Geology
Describes the sometimes forgotten Christian influence on Hutton's work.
http://www1.umn.edu/ships/religion/hutton.htm
SHiPS Resource Center
for Sociology, History and Philosophy in Science Teaching James Hutton is best known for expanding our notion of the age of the Earth. His observations of geological strata that had been uplifted on edge and eroded away, and then capped with yet more layers, revealed the presence of whole other "worlds" before us. We could no longer measure the history of the planet in terms of ordinary human lifetimes, nor even in terms of the appearance and disappearance of great civilizations. We had to adopt a whole new, geological time scale. For many, Hutton laid the foundation for dispelling religious misconceptions about a young Earthespecially as professed in some Christian traditions. Yet Hutton himself was a devout Christian. Moreover, his conclusions were strongly guided by his theology. Indeed, for Hutton, a beneficent Christian God was the major reason for believing that the world was extremely old. Somewhere, we have inverted the role of religion in Hutton's work. Nowhere do we misinterpret Hutton more deeply than in the meaning of the closing image to his great geological work, The Theory of the Earth. Hutton concluded poetically that the Earth offered "no vestige of a beginning,no prospect of an end." By today's reckoning, Hutton was asserting the unimaginably extended, "deep" time frame of an ancient Earth. But for Hutton, it was quite literal: he saw no beginning and no end to the Earth; the planet was timeless. Why?

This page augments a concise description of these elements with a consideration of St. Helena in the wider context of ocean-floor spreading and plate tectonics. A description of the island's physiography and comments on the economic geology are also included.
    Physiography
St. Helena is the deeply eroded summit of a composite volcano rising from the sea floor at a depth of 4,224m. The sub-aerial portion is approximately 122 sq. km. (47 sq. miles) in area - about half the size of the Isle of Wight. The highest point, Diana's Peak , is 823m above sea level. The small size of the visible island belies the true dimensions of this massive volcano; it is a major feature on the earth's surface. The base of the volcanic pile measures some 130km in diameter and the volume of the cone is estimated to be twenty times that of Mt. Etna - the largest European volcano. St. Helena is truly remote and, together with Ascension Island (1,127km distant), comprises the only land in 3 per cent of the earth's surface area.

Melt inclusions may provide direct samples of the uncrystallized magma including its volatile contents. In the laboratory, fluid inclusions in transparent materials like quartz, provide interesting opportunities to do high pressure and temperature experiments on fluid compositions of interest to chemists, engineers and geologists.
