62. Biophysical Regions Of Vermont
Provides information on regions organized by the landscape into smaller units that share features of climate, geology, topography, soils, natural communities, and human history.

Fact Sheet
Biophysical Regions in Vermont ...highlights in part from "Biophysical Regions of Vermont" in Wetland, Woodland, Wildland: A Guide to the Natural Communities of Vermont by Elizabeth Thompson and Eric R. Sorenson Biophysical regions organize the landscape into smaller units that share features of climate, geology, topography, soils, natural communities, and human history. Underlying, ancient and ongoing, geologic processes have set the stage and greatly influence the kinds of natural communities and human activities that occur across Vermont. Although each region has variation within it, all are widely recognized as units that are more similar than they are different In 1998, the VMC supported a research project with the goal of delineating the biophysical regions in Vermont. The process of determining biophysical regions involves the integration of data from a variety of biological and physical resources. Some of the variables used to delineate the biophysical regions include: Latitude and longitude Plant and animal species present January and July maximum and minimum temperatures Annual precipitation Bedrock geology, mineralogy and origin

This passively mud-filled excavation ( Picichnus ) is found in the Upper-Cretaceous Wall Creek Member of the Frontier Formation located in north central Wyoming on the southwestern margin of the Powder River Basin. These trace fossils are interpreted as a preserved record of a nektonic organism’s—probably a vertebrate—feeding behavior. The trace maker was likely feeding upon infaunal organisms. The sharp-walled trace truncates several burrows; however, it appears it was an attempt at nabbing the fabricator of a larger vertically oriented burrow, a portion of which can be seen at the lower tip of the winged cone. The mudstone infill is subsequently re-burrowed. In marine waters, stingrays and skates are observed expelling a water jet into the sea floor producing similar excavations Chuck D. Howell

What is radon? Radon is a radioactive gas that has no smell, taste, or color. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all rock and soil. When geologic conditions are favorable, the potential increases for high indoor levels of radon. If radon is natural, why is it a hazard? Outdoor radon levels never reach dangerous concentrations because air movement scatters radon into the atmosphere. Radon is a hazard in buildings because the gas collects in enclosed spaces. What conditions must be present for high indoor-radon levels? Four conditions must be present. The building must:
  • be built on ground that contains sufficient uranium.
  • have underlying soil that allows easy movement of radon.
  • have porous building materials, cracks, or other openings below the ground surface that allow radon from soil to enter the building.
  • have a lower air pressure inside than in the soil around the foundation.

Map from Office of the Rhode Island State Geologist The smallest state, Rhode Island has been lovingly mapped at 1:100,000 scale. The map explanation is so elaborate that it's hard to boil down to something simple. If you live in the area, this map is well worth owning. Like the rest of New England, Rhode Island is largely covered by sand and gravel dating from the latest ice age. Bedrock crops out in small scattered occurrences, or in roadcuts and building foundations and mines. This map ignores the surface coating for the living rock beneath, except for a small area on the coast and on Block Island to the south, in Long Island Sound. The whole state lies in the Avalon terrane, a block of crustal rocks that once lay off the North American continent in Late Proterozoic time more than 550 million years ago. Two chunks of that terrane are separated by a major shear zone running down the west edge of the state. The Hope Valley subterrane is on the west (in light brown) and the Esmond-Dedham subterrane is on the right covering the rest of the state. It in turn is broken in two by the light-toned Narragansett basin.

    http://www.geology.wisc.edu/~maher/air.html
Geology by Lightplane Louis J. Maher, Jr. I have used the color film taken during the flights of 1966 long after the black and white video tapes were discarded, and I have added to the collection over the years. While it is important to have detailed ground-based slides to illustrate geological features for introductory classes, a few shots from the air help to establish their overall relationship. noncommercial educational use The photographs at this web site are reduced to a width of 640 pixels. They are generally arranged geographically by a particular day's flight. Each picture is accompanied by a caption that provides photo identity number, geographic orientation, location, and the date it was taken. Jot down the photo identity number of any pictures that you wish to obtain. You can then download 2000-pixel-wide versions of them from our FTP site, the address of which will be provided later in this sequence.
