Taal Volcano is located on the island Luzon, south of the Philippines' captial Manila. It has been selected as one of 15 Decade Volcanoes . There is currently no Taal-homepage by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology's (PHIVOLCS) , hence this is only an unofficial home-page (PhiVolcs' "blessing" is indicated by a link from the PhiVolcs-www-page to this site). Aside from information on Taal, this site provides information on and translations of 19th century work of German/Austrain scientists travelling the Philippines and exerpts from the famous work of Fr. Saderra Maso , who summarized the pre-1911 activity on the basis of historical ("hard-to-get-to") accounts. Location Taal Volcano is located about 60 km SSE of Metro Manila, the capital of the Philippines. It is a complex volcanic system composed of a small volcanic island (Volcano Island), which has been the site of almost all historic activity, located within a 20x30 km lake-filled complex caldera(?) (Taal Lake, in older texts also called Lake Bonbon), one of the great volcano-tectonic depressions of the world.

I've been collecting minerals, fossils, and plain ol' pretty rocks since I was a Cub Scout, and now I'm ... well, practically a fossil myself. While working as a collector for museums, I've acquired some world class collecting localities. In 1983, Geology Adventures was founded, and now provides collecting opportunities and learning experiences to over 1000 people per year. If collecting abundant mineral specimens amid spectacular mountain scenery appeals to you, try our Spruce or Rock Candy adventures. If your kids think getting dirty in search of crystal or fossil treasures would be fun, join us for a day of exciting, educational exploration on our Crystal Kid or Amber trips. See you in the hills! Geology (from Greek ge- , "the earth") and λογος ( logos , "word", "reason")) is the science and study of the Earth , its composition, structure, physical properties, history, and the processes that shape it. It is one of the Earth sciences Geologists have helped establish the age of the Earth at about 4.5 billion (4.5x10 ) years, and have determined that the Earth's lithosphere , which includes the crust , is fragmented into tectonic plates that move over a rheic upper mantle asthenosphere ) via processes that are collectively referred to as plate tectonics . Geologists help locate and manage the earth's natural resources , such as petroleum and coal , as well as metals such as iron copper , and uranium . Additional economic interests include minerals such as asbestos perlite mica phosphates ... quartz , and silica , as well as elements such as sulfur chlorine , and helium Astrogeology refers to the application of geologic principles to other bodies of the solar system. However, specialised terms such as selenology (studies of the Moon areology (of Mars ), etc., are also in use.

    Geology, Scenery and Minerals
A "slide show" on three levels
    Introduction
The 30 colour photographs in this show depict a counter-clockwise tour of geological features around Lake Superior, the world's largest freshwater lake (see Fig. 1). The lake has an area of 82,380 km . It was part of the Mississippi drainage until the Pleistocene, and formed part of glacial lake Algonquin. The modern lake surface is 183 m above sea level, while the deepest point (406 m water depth) is 223 m below mean sea level! Starting at the Algoma district, the tour proceeds around the rocky shores of Ontario, also examining features in the hinterland to the immediate north of the lake. From the city of Thunder Bay, the tour proceeds to Duluth, Minnesota, and then east through Wisconsin to the Upper Peninsula of northern Michigan, U.S.A.

W ELCOME to G ALAPAGOS G EOLOGY ON THE W EB . For those interested in natural history, there are few places quite as facinating as the Galapagos. The intention of this web site is to provide information on the Galapagos Islands to both scientists and non-scientists alike. Charles Darwin was the first geologist to explore the Galapagos. He made many important observations of Galapagos geology and drew conclusions that remain valid today. Darwin was also fascinated by the remarkable and unique biota of the islands. His careful biological observations later led him to propose a theory, that of natural selection , that revolutionized the way scientists think of life. While the emphasis of this web site is on geology, we too have found Galapagos wildlife difficult to ignore, so you will find many images and observations on biology, as well as geology, on this site. We hope you enjoy your visit. If you are interested in news about the recent oil spill in the Galapagos and how you can help, see the Charles Darwin Foundation Web Site A Brief Introduction to Galapagos Geology
