The Midwestern Regional Center (MRC) for Global Environmental Change is located at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). The Center is one of six regional centers of the National Institute for Global Environmental Change (NIGEC). The MRC is an interdisciplinary, multi-investigator program studying the causes and consequences associated with global environmental change, particularly climate change due to human modification of the atmosphere.
MRC operates a computing laboratory for the application of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing in environmental science and natural resource management. GIS is a computer-based information technology that is designed to manage, analyze, and display spatial data. The GIS Laboratory assists students, staff, and faculty with analysis and modeling of environmental problems. GIS generated maps are used by resource managers, landuse planners, and government representatives to make informed decisions concerning the use of natural resources.

    Mission Statement
The National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC) provides remotely-sensed and modeled hydrology products for the coterminous U.S. and Alaska for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. NOHRSC airborne, satellite, and modeled snow data and products are used by NWS, other government agencies, the private sector, and the public to support operational and research hydrology programs across the nation. The NOHRSC produces snow products and information that include estimates of: snow water equivalent, snow depth, snow pack temperatures, snow sublimation, snow evaporation, estimates of blowing snow, modeled and observed snow information, airborne snow data, satellite snow cover, historic snow data, and time-series for selected modeled snow products. Interactive Snow Information National and Regional Snow Analyses Airborne Gamma Snow Survey The interactive website includes time series plots of modeled and observation data for stations, the ability to choose physical elements and shapefile overlays to display images, and create basin averaged text and map products.

    Bird Population Modeling
Applied Biomathematics has several current and recent projects related to the ecology and conservation of bird species. These projects involve data analysis on the dynamics of endangered and threatened species, developing models for extinction risk assessment, and performing population viability analysis with habitat-based metapopulation models linked to geographic information systems. If you are not familiar with these concepts, you can read short introductory material in the following pages:
The following links point to the summaries of our bird studies.
Species Conservation and Management: Case Studies is a new book that includes the application of population and metapopulation models to a wide variety of species, including 6 bird species. California Gnatcatcher is a federally threatened subspecies inhabiting the coastal sage scrub community in southern California. The coastal sage scrub is a distinctive plant community that has declined due to extensive agricultural and urban development in this area. Our project involved an analysis of the dynamics of the California Gnatcatcher in central and coastal Orange County, California. For this analysis, we first developed and validated a habitat model for the species, using GIS data. We then used this habitat model as a basis of a metapopulation model, which included demographic data such as fecundity, survival, as well as variability in these demographic rates.
