History
Both Divisions have been formed by a re-organization of the former Spatial Data Handling Division (SDH) in October 2000. The SDH Division was founded in 1981 by Prof Kurt Brassel, which makes it one of the earliest university groups exclusively devoted to teaching and research in GIScience. If you are interested in an overview of the former SDH Division, follow this link

Applications include simple distribution mapping to more complex spatial modeling incorporating climatic variables to predict areas where a species might be found. We rely on ESRI's ArcGIS suite of GIS software in our research analyses and web mapping applications. GIS technology goes far beyond general mapping. At MBG we are exploring ways in which spatial modeling and remote sensing can help us discover where plants grow, their relative distributions, and climate factors most important to their survival. We are involved with projects in Africa, Madagascar, China ,Central America, and South America. Check out some of our activities by browsing these web pages:

INTERNET RESOURCES
Create your own world: What's available with GIS
March 1999
Vol. 60, No. 3 by Victoria Lynn Packard Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is truly one discipline that displays the breadth and strength of the Internet. With a computer and access to the Web, a user has the ability to solve the problems of today and tomorrow. A user can create his or her own Utopia. GIS can be used by anyone; the environmentalist, city planner, demographic specialist, architect, and many others may benefit from it.
The resources listed below are some that I use for Geography and GIS Internet training classes. I chose sites with a multitude of links to other areas. These sites cover such areas as government, education, and commerce. Included are resources for dictionaries, newsgroups, mail lists, and periodicals to show the spectrum of material available in GIS. So enjoy and have fun creating your world! Dictionaries
As with any other discipline, GIS has its own terminology, abbreviations, and acronyms. Listed below are a few Internet sites that provide easy access to this information.

A geographic information system (GIS) is a system for creating and managing spatial data and associated attributes. In the strictest sense, it is a computer system capable of integrating, storing, editing, analyzing, and displaying geographically-referenced information. In a more generic sense, GIS is a "smart map" tool that allows users to create interactive queries (user created searches), analyze the spatial information, and edit data. Geographic information systems technology can be used for scientific investigations resource management asset management development planning ... cartography and route planning. For example, a GIS might allow emergency planners to easily calculate emergency response times in the event of a natural disaster , or a GIS might be used to find wetlands that need protection from pollution
