Summarizes the geochemical results obtained by NASA's Mars Pathfinder mission. Includes plots of geochemical trends, and comparisons with earlier Viking mission data as well as with Earth geochemistry.

Mars Pathfinder Science Results The Alpha Proton X-Ray Spectrometer on the rover measured the compositions of nine rocks. The silicon content of some of the rocks is much higher than that of the martian meteorites, our only other samples of Mars. The martian meteorites are all mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, volcanic and intrusive rocks that are relatively low in silicon and high in iron and magnesium. Such rocks would be expected to form by partial melting of the upper mantle of Mars. The melt rises up though the crust and solidifies at or near the surface. The mafic volcanic martian meteorites, referred to as basalts, are the most common rock on Earth and have also been found on the Moon. Based on the composition of the martian meteorites and the presence of plains and mountains that look like features produced by basaltic volcanism on Earth, geologists expected to find primarily basalts on Mars.
for the bumpy textures is weathered lithic fragments and crystals in volcanic rocks.

Cafe Thorium Jeff Seewald Katrina Edwards , and Wolfgang Bach conducted research cruises to undersea hot spots in the Pacific, where chemical and microbiological transformations at high temperature and pressure take place in and around underwater volcanic systems. Such sites are accessible several miles below the surface only by remote samplers and underwater submersibles that take measurements and collect samples for analyses. Ed Sholkovitz measured chemical input to the surface ocean on a novel buoy-mounted aerosol sampler, catching dust as it falls on the waters off Bermuda. Bill Jenkins made monthly measurements of dissolved gases in the ocean, to understand ocean productivity and the physical processes that mix water to depth. Bill Jenkins and Ken Buesseler also joined an interdisciplinary team of scientists from three WHOI departments to look at ocean eddies off Bermuda, which alter the local physical conditions to induce plankton blooms that change chemical conditions as they move through the ocean.

MEAS offers graduate and undergraduate degrees in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology, Geology, and Marine Science. SPECIAL LECTURE: Jack Horner: Dinosaurs from the Inside Out
Jordan Hall, room 1132, at 9:30 on Friday, Sept 23.
Jack Horner grew up in Shelby, Montana, where he found his first
dinosaur fossil at age 8. He has been looking for them ever since. He
had his first real break when he was in Montana, prospecting his
favorite hills while on vacation from his job at Princeton. He was handed some small fossil bones, and immediately recognized their significance as embryonic dinosaur remains. This led to the discovery of the first dinosaur nesting ground, in 1979, and only the second example world-wide of dinosaur eggs. From this early information, Jack has continued to make dinosaur paleontology headlines, as he used clues in the fossil record to infer dinosaur herding behavior, parental care, and nesting and reproductive strategies. More recently, Jack has teamed up with colleagues in California and Berkely to begin the field of "dinosaur paleohistology," using microscopic studies of dinosaur bone to infer growth rates, which in turn may be physiological indicators.

2.1 Introduction Of all the methods used to understand hydrologic processes in small catchments, applications of tracersin particular isotope tracershave been the most useful in terms of providing new insights into hydrologic processes. This is because they integrate small-scale variability to give an effective indication of catchment-scale processes (McDonnell and Kendall, 1992; Buttle, 1994). In contrast, internal watershed point measurements, such as those of water level or groundwater composition, cannot be used without extrapolation or additional assumptions about catchment behavior. Isotopes are also "applied" at the watershed scale (i.e., they are within all components of the hydrologic cycle). In particular, O
