Each spring, the Environment and Society Institute sponsors a half-day campus-wide colloquium that includes a variety of activities designed to showcase multidisciplinary scholarship and educational activities related to environmental science, engineering, policy, and management. Professor Orvos received his Ph.D. in 1989 from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he studied at the University Center for Environmental and Hazardous Materials Studies under Professor John Cairns, Jr. During his doctoral studies he received the 1986 Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry Pre-Doctoral Fellowship and the 1988 Cunningham Research Fellowship. His post-doctoral training was also with Professor Cairns and was supported by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Science Foundation. Dr. Orvos received his bachelor's degree in biology from Eastern Mennonite College in 1980 and his master's degree in biology from James Madison University in 1985 where he studied in the aquatic bioassay laboratory under Dr. Cletus Sellers, Jr. Following his post-doctoral training, Dr. Orvos joined Roy F. Weston, Inc., an international environmental consulting firm, where he was ultimately responsible for managing the Environmental Fate and Effect Laboratory in West Chester, PA. He then joined the Environmental Research Laboratory of SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals for six years as an environmental biologist and also taught in the evening program at Drexel University's School of Environmental Science, Engineering, and Policy in Philadelphia. During his tenure at SmithKline, he conducted research with co-op students from Drexel. From SmithKline, Dr. Orvos joined the Department of Biology at the State University of New York at Fredonia where he directed the interdepartmental Environmental Sciences Program for three years. He currently serves as an editor for the journal

The Schulich School of Engineering at The University of Calgary has developed a multi-disciplinary graduate level "environmental" program known as Engineering for the Environment or EfE, with advice and cooperation from Calgary's industrial community. The EfE program is designed to meet the needs of practicing environmental professionals in Calgary, as well as national and international graduate students. At present, more than 60 full-time and part-time graduate students are enrolled in the program. The program courses are offered in the evenings to facilitate participation of "downtown" environmental professionals. Professionals with a BSc in engineering and science disciplines are eligible for enrollment in our courses. Practicing professionals may enroll as unclassified or part-time graduate students. All courses could be credited towards MEng and MSc degrees.

There are currently around 150 academic staff actively investigating the scientific, technical and socio-economic aspects across a broad range of environmental disciplines, including the management of freshwater resources, environmental restoration, the sustainable use of natural materials, pollution control, waste management, the management of natural hazards and human health. The Centre for Environmental Research and Training plays a key role in providing a focus for the University's environmental expertise. It acts as a gateway for external organisations enabling this expertise to be made more widely accessible and provides a mechanism for the promotion and management of interdisciplinary research within the University. The Centre seeks to enhance the University's international reputation for environmental research and teaching by advancing partnerships with institutions overseas, such as in Poland, Malaysia, Thailand and the West Indies.

Ana Barros Ana Barros, Professor Her primary research interests are in Hydrology, Hydrometeorology and Environmental Physics with a focus on water-cycle processes in the coupled land-atmosphere-biosphere system particularly in regions of complex terrain, the study of multiscale interface phenomena in complex environments across the Earth Sciences, remote sensing of the environment (precipitation, clouds, soil moisture,and vegetation), climate predictability and risk assessment of natural hazards. Prof. Barros is especially proud of having involved dozens of students in undergraduate research, a great majority of which continued their studies to earn graduate degrees in science and engineering. Dr. Barros received early career young investigator awards from NSF and NASA in 1995 and 1996. She was a George W. Merck Faculty Fellow at Harvard University 1999-2003, and Packard Fellow nominee from Penn State University. She received the Prize Foundation A. Almeida in Engineering in 1985, and the Lorenz G. Straub Award for her Ph.D. thesis in 1993. Education
