Book Review:

Environmental Land Use Planning and Management is a unique new textbook that presents a diverse, comprehensive, and coordinated approach to issues of land use planning and management and their impacts on the environment. It builds on recent advances in environmental science, engineering, and geospatial information technologies to provide students with the scientific foundation they need to understand both natural land systems and engineering approaches that can mitigate impacts of land use practices. While offering a base of knowledge in planning theory and natural science, its primary emphasis is on describing and explaining emerging approaches, methods, and techniques for environmental land use planning, design, and policy. The book is divided into two parts. Part I, "Environmental Land Use Management," introduces broad concepts of environmental planning and describes management approaches. Those approaches include collaborative environmental management, land conservation, environmental design, government land use management, natural hazard mitigation, and ecosystem and watershed management. Part II, "Environmental Land Use Principles and Planning Analysis," focuses on land analysis methods, such as geospatial data and geographic information systems (GIS); soils and slope analysis; assessment of stormwater quantity and quality; land use and groundwater protection; ecological assessment for vegetation, wetlands, and habitats; and integrated analytical techniques like land suitability analysis, carrying capacity studies, and environmental impact assessment.

The Office of Environmental Services (OES) is a Division within the Department of Public Works and is Indianapolis' environmental agency. OES has been charged with maintaining and improving the environmental quality of life in Indianapolis, ensuring City compliance with environmental regulations and enforcing environmental regulations within Marion County. History
OES, in some form, has been a major part of the history of Indianapolis for the last 50 years. The City has historically had an Air Pollution Control Division dating back to the 1950's. Indianapolis, recognizing the importance of managing other environmental media, established the Water and Land Protection Division in the mid 1980's. The two divisions were combined in 1992 to form what is presently known as the Office of Environmental Services. OES has worked, and continues to work, with other City departments, local and state agencies, industry, neighborhood associations, and citizen groups to improve the quality of life in the City and to make Indianapolis a cleaner, safer, and more beautiful place to live and work. Who We Are
OES is an organization of over 40 environmental professionals, with degrees in environmental science, engineering, geology, and other natural and physical sciences. Many of the staff hold advanced degrees and are certified in several environmental specialties. The average experience level for staff members exceeds 10 years. The high caliber of our professionals, and their commitment to their profession, is demonstrated by their active involvement in State and Federal regulatory development and debates on technical issues.

Biomedical Engineering Timothy Wright, Joseph Buckwalter, and Wilson Hayes. Writing for the Journal of Orthopedic Research. Journal of Orthopedic Research. ABSTRACT
This article was published in the Journal of Orthopedic Research by the Editors. The article outlines qualities of good scientific writing, and more specifically, qualities that a good biomedical research papers has. The authors discuss the audience of their journal, four rules that make writing easier to understand, how to write a good introduction, materials, results and discussion sections, and conclude by talking about the selection of a title for a paper. RESPONSE
  • This is an invaluable resource. The journal’s editor, who is obviously extremely attuned to the qualities of a good publication, writes the article. Because this is written for the explicit benefit of the contributors to this journal, I would say this is the best resource I have come across that describes writing in my discourse community. The authors here give some simple, yet difficult to perform, advice; The harder the science, the simpler the writing should be. They suggest an average sentence length of 22 words.

Sustainability refers to the physical development and institutional operating practices that meet the needs of present users without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, particularly with regard to use and waste of natural resources. Sustainable practices support ecological, human and economic health and vitality. Sustainability presumes that resources are finite and should be used conservatively and wisely with a view to long-term priorities and consequences of the ways in which resources are used. The UC Merced Capital Development Department already incorporates many aspects of these sustainable practices and has adopted specific and comprehensive policy actions to: The UC Merced Planning, Design and Construction Department utilizes appropriate techniques to create buildings and systems that are environmentally friendly and that help provide for a sustainable environmental relationship. The campus currently uses the Silver level of the LEED certification program developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to help set goals and track the sustainability efforts of all new development on the campus and in several categories is exceeding the LEED requirements. Some of the goals that we are achieving include: Campus Facilities, Business Management and Academic Programs
