  • Water conservation outreach.
There are many opportunities locally to educate the public about water conservation and why it is important in our community. The student would work with the PBAC to identify a project, and complete it during the semester. Ideas include:
    • Performing water use audits and identifying areas for reducing water use at local residences, apartment dwellings, at the university (Greek system houses, research laboratories), businesses etc.
    • Identify types of low water use appliances available, costs for purchase and cost savings from reduced water use, and where to purchase locally.
    • Assist one city or university or the committee in general with creating conservation education materials, create a plan for distribution of information (water bill notices etc.) and follow-through with distribution.
    • Via literature and internet search (and others?), compile information on residential water conservation measures that would be appropriate for the Palouse and provide suggestions on how to implement.

    Funding Amount:
$ 300,000 for three years starting in April, 2004. Project Abstract:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has successfully increased trade between U.S. and Mexico. With increased economic activity, a number of concerns have come to light about environmental health and hazardous waste pollution in the Border and adjacent regions. In particular, hazardous pollutants from 3,000 border industries ( maquiladoras The project will provide seven short courses on environmental toxicology, risk assessment as well as remedial and preventative technologies. The courses will make 120 slots available for participants. At least one short course will be offered at each of the participating universities/institutes. Educational materials will be developed to support Mexican faculty in their teaching efforts. For example, our on-line Spanish language textbook on Environmental Toxicology will be updated. Further, Spanish language course material for bioremediation and risk assessment will be created and posted on-line. Lastly, educational material depicting successful environmental case studies will be developed and shared. Three project meetings will be scheduled for the UA and its eight Mexican partners. The meetings will be used to take care of project business (selection of fellows, tailoring short courses). More importantly, the meetings will be used to plan and implement the permanent Binational multidisciplinary higher educational partnership.

US-Mexico Binational Center for Environmental Studies and Toxicology
The framework for the Center has been established in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) entitled, US/Mexico Transborder Consortium for Environmental Studies signed by CONACyT and the University of Arizona on October 31, 2003 [ MOU The main goal for the formation of this Binational Center is to bring scientists from both countries to address risk assessment and remediation problems with hazardous chemicals (e.g. metal and organic contaminants) combining health sciences (toxicology), basic sciences (chemistry and biology), hydrogeological sciences (hydrology) and engineering. The objective is to develop technologies for clean -up or prevention of hazardous chemicals exposure to humans, and to bring together the sciences with environmental policy experts to ensure that the results of its activitie s be communicated to the government and the public. Another important objective of the center is capacity building. The center will provide professional and graduate education in environmental science, engineering, and public health creating trained personnel who will be available to solve hazardous waste issues.
    • Build the capacity to handle common environmental problems.

Environmental engineering: Protecting health and nature
    December 1998
by Kelly Jordan and John Napp Environmental engineering is an interdisciplinary subject whose overriding focus is the protection of public health and the natural environment. Within this context, environmental engineering focuses on a large body of issues: hazardous and toxic substances, water supply and resource systems, pollution control, and solid and hazardous waste management. Due to the breadth and complexity of information, only very general resources are listed in this article. Many of the Web sites listed feature links to additional environmental resources on the Internet. Mail lists and newsgroups
Airpollution-biology . This list provides discussion among scientists whose interests are focused on the impact of air pollution on the environment. Human health effects of air pollution are not discussed. Access:mailbase@mailbase.ac.uk. Alt.building.environment

Examples of water resource systems include domestic and industrial water supply, irrigation, drainage, flood control, salinity control, sediment control, and hydropower generation systems. It includes subjects in surface or subsurface (groundwater) hydrology and hydraulics. The research focus of Water Resources Engineering in the Department includes regional hyetograph and unit hydrograph development, storm drainage design method, flood risk simulation, sediment transport, water quality simulation and monitoring in lakes, reservoir, and estuaries. Active Projects Environmental Science/Engineering E nvironmental Science/Engineering is an interdisciplinary field addressing the interactions between human activities and the environment, and the engineering solutions of environmental problems. It deals with the release, transport, chemistry, treatment technologies, and control strategies of pollutants in air, water, and soils. The research focus of Environmental Science/Engineering in the Department includes air quality modeling of tropospheric ozone, particulate matter and air toxins using comprehensive state-of-science Eulerian models, membrane technology in water and wastewater treatment, neural network modeling of dynamic processes, the transport and chemistry of heavy metals in atmospheric and aquatic environments, and water quality characterization of civil engineering works.
