Welcome to the website of the African Blackwood Conservation Project (ABCP). The aim of this project is to help replenish this valuable tree in Tanzania. Most people will not have knowingly seen blackwood but almost everyone will have heard it, for it is the premier wood of choice for fine concert-quality woodwind instruments such as clarinets, oboes and flutes, as well as being used in the manufacture of bagpipes. Blackwood is also the finest material available today for producing ornamental turning . In its African homeland, it is used to make intricate and highly detailed carvings , and plays a vital role in the ecology of the East African savannah. This website serves to document our efforts to perpetuate this remarkable natural resource. Despite its importance as a world timber there have been few conservation efforts to replenish the species. Although it is not yet on the endangered list the ABCP is taking efforts now to help assure that eventuality will not occur. To learn more about the wood, its homeland, this project, the people who are trying to make it happen and how you can help, click on the links in the banner above or the sitemap below. You may also

85. Christian Ecology
Christian ecology is that branch of Christian thought dedicated to the development and application of traditional and/or cuttingedge Christian thinking to the problem of environmental destruction and the resulting planetary crisis.

Christian Ecology
Animals and birds are dying because of the wickedness of our people,
people who say, "God doesn't see what we are doing." Jeremiah 12:4 (Today's English Version) In 1967, historian Lynn White published a now famous piece entitled "The Historical Roots of Our Ecological Crisis." White, himself a Christian, concluded that many of our environmental problems could be traced to the Christian notion that God gave this earth to humans for their use and specifically directed humans to exercise dominion over the earth and all of its life forms. While it is questionable that this is what White intended, the effect of the piece has been to serve as an indictment of Christianity as the source of our environmental problems, and to render laughable the idea that Christianity might have anything to contribute to our environmental crisis. As essayist Wendell Berry has observed, "the culpability of Christianity in the destruction of the natural world and uselessness of Christianity in any effort to correct that destruction are now established cliches of the conservation movement." Largely as a reaction and response to White’s piece, Christian thinkers have over the last three decades formulated a response to White’s indictment. The response has taken three distinct paths. One path, which can be called the Stewardship Model, concludes that God did indeed give humans dominion, but only on the condition that we act as wise stewards, exercising our dominion with prudence and care. This is the model that is preferred within evangelical and fundamentalist circles, to the extent that this wing of Christianity chooses to address the environmental issue.

Ecology is essentially the study of the workings of the planet Earth Ecology , or ecological science , is the scientific study of the distribution and abundance of living organisms and how these properties are affected by interactions between the organisms and their environment . The environment of an organism includes both the physical properties, which can be described as the sum of local abiotic factors like climate and geology , as well as the other organisms that share its habitat . The term oekologie was coined in by the German biologist, Ernst Haeckel , from the Greek oikos meaning "household" and logos meaning "study"; hence, the "study of the household of nature".

The Ecology Center is a member of Earth Share of Michigan and the Michigan Environmental Council Members Local 174 Testing Finds High Level of Mercury in Store-Bought Fish in Michigan Ecology Center released the results of a major 22-state mercury testing project which included samples of swordfish and tuna taken from Kroger in Michigan. The national project confirmed that store-bought swordfish and tuna contain levels of mercury that the federal government has determined may be hazardous to human health, particularly children. EPA Balks on Banning Major Automotive Lead Use Environmentalists criticized the decision by the Environmental Protection Agency to reject a request to ban the use and sale of lead-containing weights used to balance wheels on vehicles. The Ecology Center, a Michigan-based environmental advocacy organization, had asked EPA to ban the sale of one of the largest unregulated sources of lead to the environment, automotive wheel balancing weights. The Ecology Center is now considering legal action to compel EPA action, along with ramped up efforts to pass legislation at the state level to ban the sale of lead-containing wheel weights.

    Welcome
I hope you find something interesting or useful here. By using the links above: You may find information on two molluscan groups I find particularly interesting, the Scaphopods, or tusk shells, and the Turrid Gastropods, particularly the cold-water venomous snails from the Northeastern Pacific in the genera, Oenopota Ophiodermella and Kurtziella You may also find some useful information on the husbandry of Coral Reef Aquarium animals. There is also information and some illustrations of one of my summer time passions, the Native Orchids of Montana. I have now added links to most of my online publications. Those that are missing were published in Aquarium Frontiers after February, 2000. Unfortunately, that site hasn't been updated to provide consistent access to these articles. As this condition has existed for well over a year, I doubt there will be any improvement any time soon. Finally, if you are so inclined, you may also find information about me, as well as the location of one of the more obscure towns in Montana by clicking on the "Biography" button above. Most of the illustrations in this site are thumbnails, just click on them for a larger view.
