Infrasound monitoring of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty
More than 110 nations signed the Comprehensive (Nuclear) Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) during the first week after the Treaty opened for signature in September at the United Nations in New York. This means that a start will now be made during the coming year on the construction of an International Monitoring System (IMS) which will be used to ensure compliance with the terms of the Treaty. The International Monitoring System represents the largest effort ever undertaken on a global scale to detect and locate explosions in all physical environments. The establishment of the IMS has special significance for Australia because nearly ten per-cent of all IMS facilities will to be located on Australian territory.

Numerical studies of solitary wave propagation in spatially and temporally heterogeneous waveguides
A very high resolution numerical model, which is based on an integration of the fully nonlinear nonhydrostatic primitive ensemble-averaged equations, has been developed to study wave propagation in temporally and spatially varying waveguides. Realistic boundary conditions have been developed which prevent reflections at all lateral boundaries and the upper boundary. This model is being used initially to study the formation, evolution and decay of solitary waves on a time-varying density current and solitary waves which are created in the head-on collision of density currents. Further studies of nonlinear atmospheric wave motions in other evolving waveguide systems will be carried out during the coming year.

Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives of the University Libraries, the University at Albany, SUNY. The mission of the University Archives is to collect and make available the official records of the University, its divisions, centers and faculty. The University at Albany, formerly known as the State University of New York at Albany, was transformed from a college for teachers into a University Center in 1962. Prior to that date very little original scientific research was conducted at the University. One exception to that rule was the physicist Charles Luther Andrews , a faculty member at the school from 1944-1977 (.75 cu. ft.), who was engaged in research projects with General Electric in Schenectady, primarily related to X-rays and optics. We hold a small collection of his papers, primarily offprints.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Tier I CRC Chair in Atmospheric Science
Introduction
The Earth's climate is one of the most complex physical systems that scientists have ever tried to understand. The potential for climate change due to humankind's activities is an important issue worldwide, and the course of action chosen will have major implications for this and future generations. Accurate predictions are needed to plan effectively, and advances in our knowledge of clouds, aerosols, dynamics, chemistry, ozone depletion, and atmosphere-ocean interactions are needed to respond to this challenge.
Research in the Atmospheric Science Group at Dalhousie University is dedicated toward understanding the physics and chemistry of the climate system. We design and build instrumentation, conduct field and laboratory experiments, perform data analysis, develop sophisticated models, and advance theory. Our research is performed in collaboration with students at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Departments of Physics and Atmospheric Science and Oceanography . In addition, the presence on campus of the
