    Encyclopedia: Atmospheric physics
Updated 66 days 6 hours 31 minutes ago. Other descriptions of Atmospheric physics Atmospheric physics is the application of physics to the study of the atmosphere . Atmospheric physicists attempt to model Earth's atmosphere and the atmospheres of the other planets using fluid flow equations, chemical models, radiation balancing, and energy transfer processes in the atmosphere (as well as how these tie in to other systems such as the oceans). In order to model weather systems, atmospheric physicists employ elements of scattering theory, wave propagation models, cloud dynamics, statistical mechanics and spatial statistics which are highly mathematical in nature and related to studies in applied mathematical physics pertaining to geophysical phenomena.

Temperature and moisture structure of various sub-layers of a dry convective boundary layer and their diurnal variation. (Gradient) Richardson number, saturated adiabatic lapse rate. Structure of a cloud-topped boundary layer.

About the Atmospheric Physics Research Group
Faculty: Marshall , Rust, and Stolzenburg Thunderstorm electricity is the main focus of research for the atmospheric physics group at The University of Mississippi. Although this subject has been investigated by many people over the last 250 years, surprisingly little is known of the internal electrical structure of storms or the processes by which storms become electrified. Our group investigates the electrical, dynamical, and precipitation characteristics of thunderstorms mainly through observational methods. During field campaigns, instrumented balloons are launched into thunderstorms to measure the electric field and other internal parameters of the clouds. Our observations are also contributing to a better understanding of fundamental questions in atmospheric electricity. Our electric field data have helped identify a possible lightning initiation process, and they are proving useful to scientists studying sprite and other high-altitude luminous events. In addition, we are collaborating with researchers at Russia's Institute of Applied Physics on studies of the contribution of thunderstorms to the global electrical circuit. Our unique database of nearly 200 soundings through many types of thunderstorms is a rich resource for various extended studies in atmospheric physics. For more details on this research program, see the

This subject has been investigated by many people over the last 250 years, ever since Benjamin Franklin's experiments first showed that thunderstorms are electrified. However, surprisingly little is known of the electrical structure of storms or how storms become electrified. We investigate this scientific problem primarily through observational methods. (In other words, we go out and get wet!)
Along with our collaborators from other institutions and l aboratories
we launch instrumented balloons into storms.
Our primary research area is in determining the electrical, dynamical, and precipitation characteristics of thunderstorms. We broaden these studies in many ways and dabble in other things, as described under

    Introduction
Each year the Space and Atmospheric Physics Group admits around eight postgraduate students to undertake research in space plasma physics or atmospheric physics, leading (via an initial MPhil registration) to the award of a PhD degree of the University of London. Home or EU students are supported financially by postgraduate studentship awards provided by the Particle Physics and Astronony Research Council (PPARC) or the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). The details of the type of research pursued will typically consist of some combination of data analysis and interpretation, computer modelling, or theory. The Group's students have full use of our workstation/PC-based in-house computer system. Please contact us for more information.

The Institute of Physics was founded in Shanghai in 1928. It was re-established in Taiwan in 1962 with Dr. T.Y. Wu as its first director. Succeeding directors were: Drs. W. N. Wang (1976-1977), E. K. Lin (1977-1989), L. T. Ho (acting, 1989-1990), and T. T. Tsong (1990-present). In 1966, together with Tsing-Hua University and Taiwan University, the Institute organized the Physics Research Center under the auspices of the National Science Council. In 1970, an interdisciplinary research program for atmospheric science and fluid mechanics was initiated in the Institute of Physics. In 1975 the biophysical research program was set up. During Academia Sinica's first five-year plan (1981-1985), the Institute's scope expanded to include theoretical physics, covering mainly high energy physics, nuclear physics, and statistical mechanics. The original two-story Institute building was replaced by the present one in April 1983. Since the beginning of the second five-year plan (starting 1986), the Institute has continued to grow, both in research staff and facilities. Presently, the Institute conducts research in areas including theoretical physics, nuclear physics, experimental high energy physics, condensed matter and surface physics, biophysics, and fluid and non-linear mechanics.

    Content
The composition and thermodynamics of the atmosphere. Basic aerosol and cloud physics. Turbulence in the atmospheric boundary layer.

To become familiar with the thermodynamical concepts for the atmosphere, and make use of thermodynamic diagrams for evaluation of stability and cloud formation from radiosonde soundings. To acquire a broad understanding of the processes behind aerosols, clouds and precipitation. Furthermore, to understand that these represent central driving forces for the motions of the atmosphere (and the ocean). To understand how turbulent mixing in the atmospheric boundary layer can influence conditions in the troposphere.
    Form of teaching
Lectures and colloquia/group work, 4 hours per week. Approval of two compulsory assignments. One week per assignment. Deadlines strictly enforced. No lectures in connection with assignment deadlines.

Atmospheric Physics Prof G Vaughan Dr E Norton , Dr R Worthington, H Clark, G Parton, D Waring, C Willson For further information you are invited to visit www.aber.ac.uk/ozone The Atmospheric Physics group is concerned with transport and dynamics in the atmosphere from the top of the boundary layer at about 3 km altitude to the base of the thermosphere at 90 km. This region of the atmosphere is the subject of current environmental concerns as man-made trace gases perturb the natural chemical and radiative balance. The group's work concerns both measurements and theoretical interpretation, and is based on a range of experimental facilities available within easy reach of the Department. The Mesosphere-Stratosphere-Troposphere (MST) VHF radar is a UK national facility located near Aberystwyth, and is a cornerstone of the research in atmospheric physics. This impressive phased-array radar with 400 antennae is used to study winds, atmospheric gravity waves and turbulence from near the Earth's surface to an altitude of 90 km. Gravity waves transport energy and momentum from the lower to the upper atmosphere and are of crucial importance in determining the general circulation of the stratosphere and mesosphere - a feature of particular relevance to the physics of the ozone layer.
