A pilot program to gauge technician interest in taking certification exams in a computerbased format has been launched. ASE offered 20 tests in three popular categories—including regular and recertification exams—through a computerbased test (CBT) system at more than 200 locations nationwide this winter. The next CBT test administration is scheduled in the summer. "The CBT test format was developed in response to industry requests for more frequent access to ASE certification tests," said Ronald H. Weiner, ASE President. "By offering this format in addition to the traditional paper-and-pencil twice-annual test administrations, ASE has greatly increased the availability of achieving certification." For the 2004 CBT pilot, ASE is offering certification tests for the Automobile Series (A1-A8), the Advanced Level (L1) and Parts (P2). (ASE will consider adding additional test series to the CBT lineup in the future.) ASE’s computer-based tests are administered at secure, proctored test centers, rather than over the Internet, as the integrity of the ASE certification process demands a more secure testing process than can be provided online at present. "One big advantage of CBT is the opportunity to take an ASE certification test on a weekend," said Bill Kersten, Sr. VP, Operations, ASE.

Released 7/14/05 ASE Enhanced Computer-Based Testing Registration Opens July 11, 2005 LEXINGTON, KY (July 14, 2005) - The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) opens registration on July 11, 2005 for the expanded Computer-Based Testing (CBT) format for ASE Certification Tests. The Summer 2005 testing administration will include all regular and recertification tests for the Collision (B2-B6) and Truck (T1-T8) series, along with the addition of the Service Consultant (C1) certification test. The new tests will join the existing automobile series (A1-A8), Advanced Level (L1) and Parts Specialist (P2). The Summer 2005 testing window is July 18 through August 21, 2005. Test candidates can call the ASE/CBT Call Center toll-free number at 800-525-6929 to register, reschedule and add tests during the registration window. One registration fee covers the entire five-week testing period, so the only additional cost is for any tests added. Trained call specialists will answer any questions, review locations and set up testing appointments with the candidate. You can also request a CBT information booklet and/or CD from ASE by calling 703-669-6600. Candidates have between one and two hours to take the regular ASE tests, depending upon the exam, and 30 minutes for most recertification tests. Both the L1 Regular and Recertification version are allotted two hours each. One of the major features of the CBT format is that test results are given to the candidate upon leaving the test center. Official certification materials (certificate, insignia, etc.) arrive via mail about a month after the testing window closes.

Mechanic’s Tale: Test Time
Mechanic’s Tale: Test Time
How many certificates does one man need? by  Douglas Flint Mechanic's Tale: New Kid on the Block by Douglas Flint (4/4/2005)
Sometimes it pays to wait. More Mechanic's Tales from Doug Flint Every spring and every fall I am bombarded with mailings from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, ASE for short. ASE is a totally independent testing organization whose mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair through testing and certification of repair and service professionals. If that sounds a little dry, it's straight off their Web site. In the past when the ASE mail started coming I would run to my certificate on the wall to see which tests were coming due. Now they do a good job of telling me which tests I have to worry about. The way it works is, ASE has divided auto repair into eight critical categories: Engine Repair , which covers the internal mechanical workings, diagnosis, and repair of engines.

NASCAR is taking a leadership role in addressing the car care needs of its 75 million fans by reinforcing car care tips and enabling them to find a favorite repair shop through the NASCAR Performance Network – a select group of automotive repair shops, body shops, parts stores and technicians dedicated to automotive excellence. There are three different ways to determine if your auto repair shop and employed technicians know their trade AND are worthy of your business. The only national certification available in the auto repair industry is through ASE or the National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence. Many auto repair technicians cherish the chance to compare their skills against other techs and their national average test score. In just the automotive side of ASE, there are 8 basic tests. If you pass all eight tests, you are called a Certified Master Automotive Technician. ASE has tests for parts staff, service writers, heavy truck techs, school bus techs, diesel techs, paint and body techs as well as machinists. Other techs, certainly a minority, say they won’t take the test for different reasons. The most common reason, which by the way applies to every single profession in the world, is they know a guy who was an ASE Master tech and I’m 10 times better than he is. Vote with me, spend your dollars at the shops that employ ASE Certified Techs and we will change some minds. I believe consumers who patronize facilities who employ ASE certified technicians will be better served in the long run.

Steering clear of auto repair scams
By Lucy Lazarony Do you trust your auto mechanic? If you do, consider yourself lucky. Complaints against auto repair shops fall near the top of consumer complaint lists every year. - advertisement - "I hear it from everybody, old, young, men and women," says Jeannette Kopko, senior vice president at the Better Business Bureau in Dallas. "They get frustrated and they get scared." Some folks pay through the nose for shoddy repair work. Others complain about crummy customer service. Still others are victims of outright fraud. "In the area of auto repair, you see just about everything," says John Dingman, program representative for the Bureau of Automotive Repair in California. Here's a closer look at some common auto repair rip-offs and what you can do to avoid them. Costly repairs
Many auto scams begin with a super-low price on a specific repair job. The shop reels in a customer with an advertised special, say on brakes, and then pads the work order with several other repairs.

    REPAIR FACILITY ARE ASE-CERTIFIED
Brea , CA —  Members of the International Automotive Technicians' Network (iATN) report that the repair facility they work for employs an average of 5.10 technicians. In a subsequent iATN online study, members report an average of 3.47, or 68 percent, of the technicians in the repair facility they work for are ASE-certified. "iATN member-technicians are employed by repair facilities that clearly embrace and support ASE certification. This commitment to high standards of competence and professionalism among the technicians and businesses that belong to iATN helps elevate the industry and improve consumers' perception of automotive service," said Brent Black, iATN founder and president.
"The high number of ASE-certified professionals participating in iATN is a testimony to the value such membership provides to technicians and the industry at large. ASE has been a sponsoring member of iATN since the early days of the network and we are pleased to support this important information resource helping technicians diagnose and repair the high-tech vehicles of today and tomorrow," said Ronald H. Weiner, ASE president. The data is the result of two online polls conducted by iATN in 2002 and 2003. The first study to determine how many technicians the average repair facility employs (including owner/technicians) was conducted in mid-2002 when iATN had approximately 38,000 members. Of those members, 2,293 responded to the survey. A subsequent online survey to determine the average number of ASE-certified technicians per repair facility (including owner/technicians) was completed in March 2003 when iATN had approximately 44,000 members. Of those members, 3,219 participated in the poll.
