BEHIND THE "ASE" STAR
We’ve all seen it. That blue starburst with the white letters "ASE" hanging from the local garage or body shop. Most of us have a vague idea of what it is, but aren’t really sure what’s behind it. For many car owners, especially those who have recently purchased a used car, the most dreaded drive one has to make is to a repair shop. On the technical side, most drivers and owners in today’s world know only that: "you put the key in, turn it on, the car runs, you go where you gotta go." They don’t want or need to be bothered with such things as EGR’s being plugged up, or CV joints needing replacement. So going to an auto repair shop holds as much excitement for many as going to the dentist. However, according to the 424,000 strong members of ASE, or National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence, one can ease their fears of turning their beloved car over to a stranger. But what is ASE, and what does it really mean to you?

Appraiser Certification: CREDIBILITY and COMPETENCY
How many times have you listened to body shop owners complain about poor damage estimating or, even worse, incompetent estimators? How many times does the appraiser at your shop miss items and forget to call the insurer for a supplement? Your shop's profitability and productivity begin with that damage estimate. The person controlling that pen or keyboard should understand all of the structural aspects and industry terminology involved in writing a valid and comprehensive damage report. One way to heighten appraisers' skills is through training. Estimators can combine their training and work experience to earn certificationand employing estimators certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) can prove advantageous to your shop's profit and, ultimately, reputation. Respect and Responsibility Pride in workmanship is an important trait for a professional in any segment of the automotive industry. As a certified professional, your performance should set and maintain standards for your area of expertise within the collision repair industry. Damage estimators bear a large responsibility because their performance affects that of the technicians and painters, who base their procedures on the repair estimate. Consequently, this influences the business' reputation, shop profitability and customer satisfaction.

Career and Job Highlights for Auto Mechanics and Technicians
  • The ideal preparation for technology intense jobs is formal automotive technician training.
  • Those with a working knowledge of electronics and mathematics, as well as excellent problem-solving abilities will have good opportunities for employment.
  • Advancements in technology cause automotive service technicians and mechanics to continuously be learning and improving on new methods of repair.
Auto Mechanic and Techician Career Overview
Those who have experience with the breakdown of a vehicle are aware of the value automotive service technicians and mechanics provide. Excellent reasoning skills and an understanding of vehicles is necessary for a technician to rapidly and precisely identify the problem. Diagnosing illusive problems proves to be challenging for technicians, but also provides a great deal of satisfaction.
The evolution of automotive repair has seen a change in emphasis from mechanical to technological work. Presently, vehicles use high-tech computers and complex electronic systems to monitor the performance of the vehicle. A strong sense of understanding concerning the operation of a vehicle, including how each device interacts, as well as the ability to deal with electronic diagnostic equipment and digital reference manuals is key to the success of a technician.
Vehicles with gasoline engines must pass inspections, recieve maintenance, and undergo repairs by highly skill automotive service technicians and mechanics. As automotive technology becomes more complex, workers must be more adept in dealing with computerized shop equipment and electronic parts, while also retaining the necessary handtools skill set.

Return to Federal Citizen Information Center Home Page Choosing the Right Repair Shop for Your Vehicle No matter what you drive - SUV, sports car, family sedan, pick-up, or mini-van, when you go in for repairs or service, you want the job done right. The following advice should take much of the guesswork out of finding a good repair establishment.
    I. Preliminaries Don't just drop your vehicle off at the nearest establishment and hope for the best. That's not choosing a shop, that's merely gambling.
  • Read your owner's manual to become familiar with your vehicle and follow the manufacturer's suggested service schedules. Start shopping for a repair facility before you need one; you can make better decisions when you are not rushed or in a panic. Ask friends and associates for their recommendations. Even in this high-tech era, old-fashioned word-of-mouth reputation is still valuable. Check with your local consumer organization regarding the reputation of the shop.
