But this lamp, picked up by garage sale diehard Mister Jalopy for two clams, makes me think I ought to reconsider. The garage sale purveyor said that it was some sort of obscure director's award. Maybe a cinematographer's award. The garage sale matron really had no idea and was just making stuff up. She believed her own bullshit, as they often do. I blame the early rising, lack of coffee and excessive sun exposure. Since I garage sale every week, I don't lose my shit when I have a garage sale. I am carved of wood. Practically an Olympian of garage sales.

What is SXP?
SXP stands for Simple XML Persistence, and is a quick-and-dirty C++ library I threw together. It provides a simple (I hope) mechanism for enabling the objects in your application to persist themselves (i.e. read from and write to) to a XML file. It is built as a C++ wrapper around James Clark's excellent expat parser. SXP's major selling points are:
  • ease of use: a major design goal for it was adding XML persistence to a class to take around 2 line of code per class member (one for reading and one for writing). Efficiency concerns and C++ syntax quirks expanded this number to around 4 lines of code per class member (plus some fixed overhead); still, you should be able to add XML persistence to your classes in a minutes, rather than hours. efficiency: XML persistence via SXP adds to your persistable objects four virtual functions and no data members. If you need to support persisting of object references, you might need to add a single pointer to your objects. SXP can be used directly with all but the most lightweight of objects. SXP uses hash tables and works with one string compare ( ) per XML tag in the input file. SXP reuses its internal objects from a pool to avoid constant allocation/deallocation of small objects.

XML
XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a flexible way to create common information formats and share both the format and the data on the World Wide Web, intranets, and elsewhere. For example, computer makers might agree on a standard or common way to describe the information about a computer product (processor speed, memory size, and so forth) and then describe the product information format with XML. Such a standard way of describing data would enable a user to send an intelligent agent (a program) to each computer maker's Web site, gather data, and then make a valid comparison. XML can be used by any individual or group of individuals or companies that wants to share information in a consistent way. XML, a formal recommendation from the World Wide Web Consortium ( ), is similar to the language of today's Web pages, the Hypertext Markup Language (
