Welcome to the VRL Home Page !
The University of Michigan Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) at the College of Engineering explores innovative applications of immersive and non-immersive virtual environments in a variety of areas. For industrial applications, research is focused on virtual prototyping of engineering designs - especially in the automotive and marine industry - the simulation of manufacturing processes, and related engineering tasks. Additional activities include the use of virtual reality in accident simulations, medicine, architecture, archeology, education, and other areas. As an interdisciplinary facility, the VRL collaborates with many disciplines within the university and serves the outside community. Through a combined directorship, the Laboratory cooperates closely with the University of Michigan 3D Lab

Terminology
Head-Mounted Display (HMD) BOOM ... Applications
Terminology
The term 'Virtual Reality' (VR) was initially coined by Jaron Lanier, founder of VPL Research (1989). Other related terms include 'Artificial Reality' (Myron Krueger, 1970s), 'Cyberspace' (William Gibson, 1984), and, more recently, 'Virtual Worlds' and 'Virtual Environments' (1990s).
Today, 'Virtual Reality' is used in a variety of ways and often in a confusing and misleading manner. Originally, the term referred to 'Immersive Virtual Reality.' In immersive VR, the user becomes fully immersed in an artificial, three-dimensional world that is completely generated by a computer.
Head-Mounted Display (HMD)
The head-mounted display (HMD) was the first device providing its wearer with an immersive experience. Evans and Sutherland demonstrated a head-mounted stereo display already in 1965. It took more then 20 years before VPL Research introduced a commercially available HMD, the famous "EyePhone" system (1989).
A head-mounted display (HMD):
Web size
(83 K)
A typical HMD houses two miniature display screens and an optical system that channels the images from the screens to the eyes, thereby, presenting a stereo view of a virtual world. A motion tracker continuously measures the position and orientation of the user's head and allows the image generating computer to adjust the scene representation to the current view. As a result, the viewer can look around and walk through the surrounding virtual environment.

It was formed on 27 Feb 1998 with the goal of developing tools and recommended practice for the representation of geographical data using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML). The desire is to enable geo-referenced data, such as maps and 3-D terrain models, to be viewed over the web by a user with a standard VRML plugin for their web browser. The GeoVRML Working Group has a mailing list where discussions and developments are posted. Currently, this list consists of over 200 members drawn from a wide gamut of backgrounds and nationalities, including members from industry, government, and academia; geographers, geologists, computer graphics developers, and of course interested hobbyists. The group has recently produced the GeoVRML 1.1 specification, providing a number of extensions to VRML for supporting geographic applications. There is also an accompanying Open Source Java sample implementation of these nodes. Finally, these nodes are part of Amendment 1 to the VRML97 ISO standard. Working Group Information

36. Virtual Reality - Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia
virtual reality (abbreviated VR) describes an environment that is simulated However, in reality, it is always easy to tell VR from reality the images
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_reality
Virtual reality
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Virtual reality (VR) is an environment that is simulated by a computer . Most virtual reality environments are primarily visual experiences, displayed either on a computer screen or through special stereoscopic displays , but some simulations include additional sensory information, such as sound through speakers or headphones . Some advanced and experimental systems have included limited tactile feedback. Users can often interact with a VR environment, either through the use of standard input devices such as a keyboard and mouse , or through specially designed devices like a cyberglove . The simulated environment can be similar to the real world, for example, simulations for pilot or combat training, or it can differ significantly from reality, as in VR games. In practice, it is very difficult to create a convincing virtual reality experience, due largely to technical limitations on processing power and image resolution. Virtual reality originally denoted a fully immersive system, although it has since been used to describe systems lacking cybergloves etc., such as VRML on the World Wide Web and occasionally even text-based interactive systems such as MOOs or MUDs . Non-immersive virtual reality uses a normal monitor, and the person manipulates the virtual ambient using an input device.
