Well written, entertaining, basics for 1 hour presentation.
http://www.luv.asn.au/overheads/prog/index.html
An introduction to Linux/Unix programming
Preamble
This talk is a brief guide to Linux programming languages, tools and concepts. It is aimed at programming novices or programmers migrating from a Windows system (and your first question is probably " Where's the IDE? The aim is to introduce you to the concepts, the possibilities and the tools used in Unix programming, focusing on Linux in particular. You will not come away from this talk with an advanced knowledge of C pointers, OOP design in Python or how to hack a network driver in the Linux kernel. There are limits to what you learn in one hour!

      Using it
      1. What is it?
g4u ("ghost for unix") is a NetBSD-based bootfloppy/CD-ROM that allows easy cloning of PC harddisks to deploy a common setup on a number of PCs using FTP. The floppy/CD offers two functions. The first is to upload the compressed image of a local harddisk to a FTP server, the other is to restore that image via FTP, uncompress it and write it back to disk. Network configuration is fetched via DHCP. As the harddisk is processed as an image, any filesystem and operating system can be deployed using g4u. Easy cloning of local disks as well as partitions is also supported. For the curious, I've added a few screenshots:
      • Booting g4u in bochs
      • Device detection
      • Welcome to g4u!
      • Some random g4u commands ...
      • Restoring with slurpdisk
      2. Why not one of the alternatives?
      • Server-part often runs (only) under DOS/Windows. I wanted to use a Unix based server.
      • Supported filesystems include everything from Microsoft, but others are not handled properly (Solaris/x86, NetBSD, ...)

This is an unofficial archive of GNU information. The FSF now has the "official" GNU web pages set up. It is mainly a collection of information that I have collected over the years Much of it is either "historical" information or information that FSF does not keep in the software archives. I also try to maintain links to all the GNU resources I know of around the web. This page pretty much represents all the information I have relating to GNU, so please investigate the various links I have here before sending me e-mail (unless you like the words "I don't know").

    A Brief History of Unix
    By Charles Severance
This document is designed to give people with no previous UNIX experience some sense of what UNIX is. This document will cover the history of UNIX and an introduction to UNIX.
HISTORY OF UNIX AND CAUSES FOR ITS POPULARITY
Most discussions of UNIX begin with the history of UNIX without explaining why the history of UNIX is important to understanding UNIX. The remainder of this document will describe some strengths and weaknesses of UNIX and attempt to explain why UNIX is becoming popular. All of UNIX's strengths and weaknesses can be directly related to the history of its development, hence a discussion of history is very useful. UNIX was originally developed at Bell Laboratories as a private research project by a small group of people starting in 1969. This group had experience with a number of different operating systems research efforts in the 1970's. The goals of the group were to design an operating system to satisfy the following objectives:
    • Simple and elegant
    • Written in a high level language rather than assembly language
    • Allow re-use of code
Typical vendor operating systems of the time were extremely large and all written in assembly language. UNIX had a relatively small amount of code written in assembly language (this is called the kernel) and the remaining code for the operating system was written in a high level language called C.
