REALbasic 2005, recently released by REAL Software, is a program that allows both professional and non-professional programmers to easily build software for Linux. REALbasic 2005 is similar to Visual Basic, but facilitates the deployment of software to Linux, Windows, and Macintosh from the same code base. Geoff Perlman, president and CEO of REAL Software claims that "REALbasic is cross-platform that really works." REALbasic supports Linux by letting windows users convert their Visual Basic files to REALbasic so that they can easily switch working from a Windows computer to a Linux computer. The introductory price for the software is set at $399.95.

GIMP for Unix
Getting and Installing the GIMP
There are various ways to obtain and install the GIMP for Unix systems. In addition to the source code distribution here on www.gimp.org, you can get binaries for various flavors of Unix. At the moment we know about the following binary packages for GIMP 2.2 on Unix. These binaries are provided by GIMP users. We did not test them; use at your own risk.
  • GNU/Linux BSD Sun Solaris If you cannot find a pre-compiled package of GIMP 2.2 for your system, you can build and install the GIMP from the source code . This is not that hard, so don't be afraid and give it a try.
    Requirements
The GIMP runs on most Unix systems using X11 (the X Window System). If your system can run a graphical web browser, chances are that it can also run the GIMP. It runs even on relatively old PCs (Pentium 200) or on old workstations (Ultra1). The amount of memory can be an important factor, especially if you intend to work on large images. A minimum of 128 MB of RAM is recommended, but actually you should have 256 MB or more, and several GB does not hurt when you want to edit really large images. In addition to the basic X11 libraries, the following is a list of what you will need to run the GIMP on your system:

124. The Andrew Consortium
Free, medium featured (word processor; HTML, program and drawing editors; directory and help browsers; spreadsheet; mail/bulletinboard manager; application builder; scripting language), unix. Open source.
http://www-2.cs.cmu.edu/~AUIS/

The sources for andrew-8.0 are now available (and in tarred-compressed form). However, they have not been completely tested. We recommend you continue to use 7.5.
What is Andrew?
The Andrew User Interface System (Andrew) is a leading graphical user interface system meeting these often-requested needs:
  • word processor
  • html editor
  • program editor
  • drawing editor
  • directory browser
  • help browser
  • spreadsheet
  • mail / bulletin board manager
  • application builder
  • scripting language
Andrew offers an extensible compound document architecture which can create and combine just about anything, from text to pictures to graphs to spreadsheets to figures, into a single document on your computer screen. The system was aptly presented in a series of articles published in the Linux Journal during 1994. Read through them to familiarize yourself with Andrew. Alternatively, view the system by taking a look at Screen Images of the Software along with a description of how it works (much abbreviated alternative to reading through the documents above).

Why Block Ads?
Increased Speed
The following quote came across the Edupage clipping service recently: ...Web surfers weary of enduring the "pulsating, candy-colored wave of advertising that has spread across the Internet," increasingly are turning to ad-blocking to speed up their download times. "They are a symbol of people saying, 'I'm not going to take it anymore,'" says Jakob Nielsen, co-founder of the Nielsen-Norman Group. ... Many online advertisers dismiss the trend toward ad-blocking, noting that when faster connections are available, consumers will not be so annoyed about being forced to download cumbersome advertisement files.
(Los Angeles Times 2 Mar 99)
Unfortunately, higher internet access speeds make the problem worse, not better. As access speeds grow, the size and complexity of ads grows with it. Current ads contain animation or executable material and may even be complete programs that contain crude games. The bloat in these ads keeps the download times for pages at the ragged edge of tolerability even as access speeds increase dramatically. At the same time, the textual content that the ads supposedly support stays roughly the same, so the percentage of bandwidth used for ads climbs sharply and will approach 99% in the not-too-distant future.

THE USAIL QUIZ FUNCTION IS CURRENTLY BROKEN AND WILL NOT RETURN GRADED QUIZZES! THE QUIZ FUNCTION HAS BEEN REMOVED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE! WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY PROBLEMS THIS MAY CAUSE!
What is USAIL?
The USAIL project is both an independent study course for prospective system administrators and a reference resource. As more universities and other institutions take advantage of the World Wide Web as an educational medium, more information on system administration becomes available online. We hope that USAIL can serve as a central location for accessing that information. The USAIL project is an infrastructure developed to provide access to a large number of external (to the USAIL archive) Unix information resources on the internet. Only some of the documents listed were written by the Unix Workstation Support Group (UWSG) at Indiana University
What USAIL is Not
The USAIL project does not offer online certification . It is intended purely as an independent study course for beginning to advanced Unix system administrators to hone their skills. We do, however, offer a comprehensive nine-day, in-class (you have to be physically present) course on Unix system administration as part of the University's Education Certification (EdCert) program The expanded table of contents shows a list of all the documents available. The "Library Lists" sections contains a series of online libraries on specific topics and is intended to serve as quick reference for looking up information. The navigation buttons on EdCert pages look exactly like the USAIL navigation buttons except the EdCert buttons are blue. Many other documents listed here contain navigation buttons that have nothing to with USAIL.

An interactive time-sharing operating system invented in 1969 by Ken Thompson after Bell Labs left the Multics project, originally so he could play games on his scavenged PDP-7. Dennis Ritchie, the inventor of C, is considered a co-author of the system. By 1991, Unix had become the most widely used multiuser general-purpose operating system in the world. Many people consider this the most important victory yet of hackerdom over industry opposition.
