UNIX Utilities and Scripting Languages
All of the standard UNIX utilities and scripting languages are included in Mac OS X: editors such as emacs, vim and even ed; file management tools such as cp, mv, ls and tar; shell scripts including bash (the default shell), tcsh (csh) and zsh. Tiger adds the korn shell so you can run scripts written for other operating systems more easily. And of course you can use scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, tcl, Ruby and Python, with native support for the popular Tcl/TK, TKInter and WxWidgets toolkits. Python users can also script the powerful Quartz compositing engine. Visit the Open Source page for more Open Source utilities in Mac OS X.
Universal Libraries
Mac OS X provides a robust set of optimized libraries, making it easy to port your existing UNIX code. For example, a standard, multithreaded C library (libc) includes support for such capabilities as reentrant variants of standard functions, facilitating the porting of thread-aware applications to Mac OS X. For applications that require non-Roman character sets, Mac OS X supports wide character datatypes (wchar_t and others). Tiger also supports UNIX/Linux portability APIs, including System V semaphores, so porting applications from versions of UNIX such as Linux and Solaris presents no problem. Tiger enhances the stellar cross-platform API support in Panther by adding powerful new Open Source libraries for XML transformations (libxslt) and data persistence (SQLite), as well as support for common UNIX services such as System V message queues.

102. Nightfall Eclipsing Binary Star Program
open source Linux/unix Interactive program for computing synthetic lightcurves and generating animated views and best-fit models of eclipsing binary stars.
http://www.lsw.uni-heidelberg.de/~rwichman/Nightfall.html
[Deutsch] Overview Details Download ... Requirements
Overview
Nightfall is an astronomy application for fun, education, and science. It can produce animated views of eclipsing binary stars, calculate synthetic lightcurves and radial velocity curves , and eventually determine the best-fit model for a given set of observational data of an eclipsing binary star system. It is, however, not able to fry your breakfast egg on your harddisk. Nightfall comes with a user guide, and a set of observational data for several eclipsing binary star systems.
New: Italian translation added
New: Now supports OpenGL animations
New: Support for parallelization based on MPI The screenshots show a lightcurve of the eclipsing binary star TY Boo (left), a snapshot of the animated simulation of the same star (middle), and the interactive Roche potential display (right).
New: MPEG movie of OpenGL animation: output.mpg (300 kB)
Details
Nightfall is a mildly ultramundane code of baroque complexity (I like Verdi and Haendel on lazy sunday mornings - friday evenings are better with Iron Maiden and a good whisky). Nightfall is based on a physical model that takes into account the nonspherical shape of stars in close binary systems, as well as mutual irradiance of both stars, and a number of additional physical effects. Nightfall can handle a large range of configurations, including overcontact (common envelope) systems, eccentric (non-circular) orbits, surface spots and asynchroneous rotation (stars rotating slower or faster than the orbital period), and the possible existence of a third star in the system ('third light').

105. Secure Programming For Linux And Unix HOWTO -- Information On Creating Secure So
Secure Programming for Linux and unix HOWTO Home Page.
http://www.dwheeler.com/secure-programs/
Secure Programming for Linux and Unix HOWTO Creating Secure Software
This is the main web site for my free book, the Secure Programming for Linux and Unix HOWTO . This book provides a set of design and implementation guidelines for writing secure programs for Linux and Unix systems. Such programs include application programs used as viewers of remote data, web applications (including CGI scripts), network servers, and setuid/setgid programs. This document includes specific guidance for a number of languages, including C, C++, Java, Perl, Python, and Ada95. I give this book away in the hope that future software developers won't repeat past mistakes, resulting in more secure systems.
Getting the Book
Most readers will want to either:

Nothing but Unix. [Home] [Features] [Programming] [Mac OS X] [Contribute] ... [Search] Perl Best Practices Linux Journal has a very good review of the book Perl Best Practices . It sounds like an interesting book for any Perl programmer. I have written a good amount of parsing stuff in Perl but not recently, but if I were planning to write some Perl code this sounds like a great book to check out. "Conway's bravery comes from his decision to highlight the problems that programmers can get themselves into when programming in Perl. Typically, these problems are with Perl as opposed to the programmer, and there's plenty of criticism of the programming language adored by the majority of Conway's readership. Conway's saving grace is that, having criticized, he then proceeds to demonstrate a technique or practice for avoiding that which he criticized. Make no mistake, some of Conway's advice is controversial." rdesktop is an open source client for Windows NT Terminal Server and Windows 2000/2003 Terminal Services, capable of natively speaking Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) in order to present the user's NT desktop. Unlike Citrix ICA, no server extensions are required. rdesktop currently runs on most UNIX based platforms with the X Window System, and other ports should be fairly straightforward. rdesktop was initially written by Matthew Chapman based on various scarce documentation, wire sniffs, and trial-and-error. It is released under the GNU Public Licence (GPL). Please send feedback, bug reports and patches to the appropriate mailing list . Patches can also be submitted to the SF patch tracker
