SI Testimonials Summer Institute Since 1988, OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center), an initiative of the Ohio Board of Regents, has offered a unique learning opportunity to Ohio's gifted high school freshmen and sophomores and their teachers. In just two short weeks, OSC Summer Institute participants experience firsthand the dynamic fields of high performance computing (HPC) and networking. Working in small groups with the guidance of OSC faculty, they contemplate everything from computational chemistry to mechanical engineering, all while applying newly learned programming and visualization skills. To make the experience well-rounded, OSC invites experts from the science, HPC and networking communities to speak with the students about relevant topics and careers in science. SI Testimonials

ISC2005 Reaches Registration Record - 650 Participants
While early registrations pointed to record particpation, organizers of ISC2005 were pleasantly surprised when registration reached 500, then soon surpassed 600. Ultimately, more than 650 particpants registered for this year's conference. Conference Chairman Prof. Hans Meuer noted that more people checked in the day before ISC2005 opened than attended the first meeting back in 1986. "As I spoke with attendees this year, I have the impression that people are not only engaged in this year's program, but they are also already looking forward to meeting next year in Dresden." Information about ISC2006 can be accessed at http://www.supercomp.de/
When ISC began the meeting series in Mannheim, it had 80 participants and one would never have dreamed it would achieve the size and scope of the conference we see today. It is especially gratifying that as ISC celebrates its 20th anniversary, it will have a record number of participants from around the world to help mark the occasion.
Reflections on ISC at its 20 th Anniversary
"Intel has been providing building blocks and innovative technologies for the technical computing market more than a decade. During this time, ISC has provided us a very welcome and high-quality forum for interaction with end users and fellow travelers in the industry. ISC has established itself as a key European HPC event while maintaining a technically focused atmosphere. We look forward to Intel's continued association with ISC for many years to come."

Thoughts on High Performance Computing: 1989-2003 I have been involved in technical computing for over 40 years, starting with minicomputers that were used by this community. This is a collection of articles, memos, talks, and testimony covering that period.
  • Paths and cul de sacs on the endless road to supercomputing. (2.5 PPT). Talk given at the 100th Centenary of John Vincent Atanasoff at Iowa State University on 30 October-November 1 at their Symposium on Modern Computing. This talk is substantially along the lines of my criticism of the U.S. efforts to regain supremacy for the world's fastest computer from Japan. Our approach that uses loosely coupled, commodity-based uni- and multi-processor computers is still not a match for a very high speed cross-point switch interconnecting shared memory vector processors that NEC has evolved based on the "Cray" formulae. Global Grid Forum Keynote 25 June 2003, Seattle. ( 12 MB PPT, ) Basic messages using six examples: enable your applications now as web services, Grid developers need to adopt users in order to understand how to create the Grid, and we see a real drive to Community and Data Centric Computing. This new world will be around databases and data mining where discoveries come from analyzing large datasets. Over time, the web services program model may be so pervasive, that these services will be the way to communicate within the computer. Furthermore, web services begin to open up the 20 year promise of distributed computing.

CS 575 is an interdisciplinary course to introduce students in the sciences, engineering and other programming related disciplines to advanced computing techniques using the supercomputers at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC). Additional architectures may also be explored. The computing projects have a goal to effectively use, by the end of the course, MPI on Rohan as well as MPI on the IBM SP, Blue Horizon.
Prerequisites are a programming background in Fortran or C
Problem solving skills will be enhanced through computational experiments that will involve individual and group (collaborative) learning exercises. This emphasizes how science is done these days - involving collaboration, investigation and communcation.

Grid computing facilitates the formation of "Virtual Organizations" for shared use of distributed computational resources. Under the leadership of Dr. Ian Foster , the DSL hosts research and development activities designed to realize the potential of "Grids" for computational science and engineering. Ten Secrets for Successful Customer Service White Paper The Supercomputing Speed Barrier By Jay Lyman September 13, 2002 4:00AM The Q supercomputer eventually will be able to surpass 100 teraflops, Los Alamos National Laboratory spokesperson Jim Danneskiold told NewsFactor. "We don't see a significant barrier, and we've announced plans for 200 teraflops," he said. Don't be surprised if you achieve your business goals sooner. Introducing PlanView Enterprise. You can now align IT with your business strategies, elevate your company's IT performance and increase enterprise-wide visibility. For details, visit www.planview.com/enterprise Supercomputing speeds continue to rise, with yesterday's fastest machines buried by today's speed kings, but when will supercomputers reach their limits? Most experts agree that current barriers to supercomputing speeds which are approaching hundreds of teraflops will fall. A teraflop equals 1 trillion floating point operations per second.
