SQL Tutorial
Version 2.1
This document is a general tutorial on the database sublanguage - SQL. It is not product oriented but rather uses standard SQL (SQL92). The tutorial doesn't cover all of SQL92; it concentrates on a subset of the standard that is both usable and commonly supported. Note: This tutorial describes the subset of SQL92 supported by FirstSQL/J 100% Java ORDBMS . Feel free to download and use the database for learning and educational purposes. The subset is primarily SQL92 Intermediate Level but has some Entry Level features. The tutorial only describes pure SQL92 capabilities. No proprietary extensions are included. For questions, notes and suggestions on this tutorial contact us at info@firstsql.com
Introduction
SQL (Structured Query Language) is a database sublanguage for querying and modifying relational databases. It was developed by IBM Research in the mid 70's and standardized by ANSI in 1986. The Relational Model defines two root languages for accessing a relational database Relational Algebra and Relational Calculus. Relational Algebra is a low-level, operator-oriented language. Creating a query in Relational Algebra involves combining relational operators using algebraic notation. Relational Calculus is a high-level, declarative language. Creating a query in Relational Calculus involves describing what results are desired. SQL is a version of Relational Calculus. The basic structure in SQL is the

Reactivate your database here Hardware Needed Thanks very much to Boris M! He has donated a great 16 port switch!! T here are literally thousands of web hosting companies, and most provide some limited form of database hosting. I have not seen anyone offering dedicated database hosting, and that is the concept that I am testing here(of course now that I've said that, hundreds of you are going to email me about DB hosts :)) My grand plan is to begin by offering free MySQL hosting, and if the interest is there I plan to add PostgreSQL SAPDB Sybase , and possibly Oracle (all for free - as the licenses allow). Now, I'm not saying this is the most ideal situation for hosting your data. For most production environments you'd want it coupled with your webserver. Clearly it's going to be slower. But maybe you just want to get your feet wet with MySQL but don't want to load/patch/admin it, maybe you want to see how portable your SQL code is, maybe your webhost doesn't have a database, maybe you want to compare performance (but not with MS SQL Server ) etc.

Introduction
The Structured Query Language (SQL) comprises one of the fundamental building blocks of modern database architecture. SQL defines the methods used to create and manipulate relational databases on all major platforms. At first glance, the language may seem intimidating and complex but it's really not all that bad. In a series of articles over the next few weeks we'll explore the inner workings of SQL together. By the time we're through, you'll have the fundamental knowledge you need to go out there and start working with databases!
This week, our first article in the SQL series provides an introduction to the basic concepts behind SQL and we'll take a brief look at some of the main commands used to create and modify databases. Throughout this article, please keep our goal in mind: we're trying to get the "big picture" of SQL not a mastery of the individual commands. We'll provide a few examples for illustrative purposes and explain the theory behind them, but don't feel frustrated if you can't write your own SQL commands after reading this article. We'll cover each of the major commands in detail in future weekly installments. If you'd like a reminder in your e-mail inbox each week when the next article is posted, please take a moment and

Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide comprehensive list of pointers/URLs to quickly setup PostgreSQL and also to advocate the benefits of Open Source Code system like PostgreSQL, Linux. PostgreSQL is pronounced as Post-gres-cue-el (Postgres-QL) and not Postgre-es-cue-el. Each and every computer system in the world needs a database to store/retrieve the information. The primary reason you use the computer is to store, retrieve and process information and do all these very quickly, thereby saving you time. At the same time, the system must be simple, robust, fast, reliable, economical and very easy to use. Database is the most VITAL SYSTEM as it stores mission critical information of every company in this world. Each and every industry in this world needs a database system. Industries like telecom, automobile, banks, airlines, etc.. will not function efficiently without a database system. The most popular database systems are based on the International Standard Organisation (ISO) SQL specifications and ANSI SQL (American) standards. The current specifications widely used in the industry are ISO/ANSI SQL 1992. Upcoming standard is the SQL 1998/99 which is also called SQL-3 is still under development. Popular database like Oracle, Sybase and Informix systems are based on these standards or are trying to implement these standards.
