Microsoft licenses speech-recognition technology
From... By George A. Chidi (IDG) Microsoft has licensed speech-recognition technology from SpeechWorks International, the two companies announced Thursday. Microsoft hasn't said in what products or services it plans to use the Speechify text-to-speech technology, according to a SpeechWorks spokeswoman. Speechify allows text-based information such as e-mail, news, or other dynamic content to be read to telephone callers automatically. It can also be used in speech-activated systems for conducting transactions by phone. America Online and Yahoo have each licensed the technology for use in their phone portals. Speech recognition technology will hear you now
From... By Ian Lamont (IDG) Customer service at AirTran Airways has come a long way in the past few months. Prior to this year, if you called the airline which operates about 300 flights daily, mostly on the East Coast to find out about flight availability or to check on flight delays, chances are you would have waited for an average of 7 minutes before your call was picked up by a call center representative. It would have taken an additional two and a half minutes for the AirTran staffer to handle the call. If you make a similar call today to AirTran, you would be put through in about 2 seconds. And your question would be answered in just over a minute, on average. The reason for the dramatic reduction in customer handling times and associated costs, such as 800 toll charges is speech recognition. After years of hype and false starts, automated speech recognition (ASR) technology is ready for prime time. The trend has become apparent in the customer service arena, especially in the airline industry, which has been one of the most enthusiastic adopters.

David Brin It is an honor to be invited to speak before such a distinguished gathering of champions for literacy. I have been asked, before beginning my own remarks, to comment on some of the statements made by my fellow speakers. First off, I am glad that Bruce Sterling and I agree about Benjamin Franklin, one of my principal heroes. My wife and I named our newborn son after him. Ben Franklin's life story is a lesson in humility for those of us with ambitions to grasp the culture around us. That culture is now much too vast and complicated for one person to encompass, or even adequately sample. Even in Franklin's day, it was already too complex for anyone but a great genius to span. He was the last person, I believe, who read all the great books of his time, had deep conversations with all of the great minds, and dated all the interesting women. It's too late now, even for a genius. Our culture is simply too enormous. Bruce also brought to mind something Garrett Hardin wrote about in his book

The Department of Culture and Communication offers the B.S. in Communication Studies, as well as the M.A. and Ph.D. programs in Media Ecology and Graphic Communication Management and technology, and the M.A. program in speech and Interpersonal Communication.
http://www.nyu.edu/education/culturecomm/
Welcome
The Department of Culture and Communication is committed to the proposition that society is a form of communication. Our core pursuit is advancement of research, scholarship, and teaching in the various ways that human beings make, disseminate and share meaningful symbols as individuals and social groups. To us, communication is the foundational practice of human experience and culture is the shared, lived realities of particular groups. We investigate the ways in which the technologies of communication record, transmit and shape what we know and do.
Our academic terrain is interdisciplinary, equally informed by the humanities and social sciences. Students and scholars of culture and communication must appreciate and explore communicative and cultural practices that extend beyond their own place and time. We value historical thinking as a way of understanding the present. We take seriously the premise that we live in a world of cultures, contested and dynamic.
The department provides a rich diversity of undergraduate and graduate courses. Instruction ranges from theoretical and historical accounts of communication systems in general to specific case studies of particular forms, methods, and modes of communication. Our courses confront the issues and challenges that changing technology, media forms, institutions, and social and cultural habits present to us in a global and connected age. Working with the professional communities in New York City and elsewhere, we seek to build our students' professional competencies and support their desire to pursue careers in communication and media.
