Speech Platforms Group

Overview Microsoft Research has a group in Redmond and another in Beijing working together to improve spoken language technologies. Our main goal is to build applications that make computers available everywhere, and work with Speech Platforms Group product group to make this vision a reality. We are interested not only in creating state-of-the-art spoken language components, but also in how these disparate components can come together with other modes of human-computer interaction to form a unified, consistent computing environment. We are pursuing several projects to help us reach our vision of a fully speech-enabled computer. In Redmond we are working on multimodal user interfaces , and that helps us discover real problems that we need to solve to make speech recognition more useful. The first such application we built was MiPad , a personal information manager used with speech and pen. We are also working on several other areas, including

Speech technology for applications inches forward
From... By Matt Berger (IDG) An early version of an emerging technology that will allow users to control software applications using the human voice has been released to developers. A group led in part by Microsoft Corp. and Speechworks International Inc., known as the SALT Forum, short for Speech Application Language Tags, released the first public specification of its technology. When completed, the technology would allow developers to add speech "tags" to Web applications written in XML (Extensible Markup Language) and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), allowing those applications to be controlled through voice commands rather than a mouse or a keyboard. Other founding members of the SALT Forum include Cisco Systems Inc., Comverse Inc., Intel Corp. and Philips Electronics N.V. Nearly 20 other companies have announced support for the effort, according to information at the group's Web site.

Speech technology goes mobile, online
From... by Aoife McEvoy (IDG) Artificial voice and speech recognition are gaining on human ears and vocal chords, especially with the debut of tools that may make Internet chats verbal, not textual. Recorders that automatically transcribe your memos, headsets that make it easier to bypass the telephone company with Internet phone calls, and the promise of a widely voice-enabled Web were among the advances showcased at SpeechTEK 2000 last week.

The Power of Speech Technology
Can there be anything in common between a Eurofighter pilot engaging enemy fighters with missiles and a paramedic working on a car accident victim on his way to hospital? Speech recognition technology used in the Eurofighter is being developed for paramedics. Technology developed by QinetiQ shows there clearly is. Both are learning to use new technology designed to interpret speech into instrument data, and vice versa. Originally designed to ease the heavy work load of pilots flying the single-seat Eurofighter, speech technology is now being tested by both the Defence Medical Services and Surrey Ambulance Service, and has recently been spun out into a new company called '20/20 Speech.'
Just as the system allows the Eurofighter pilot to ask his aircraft for 'fuel status,' and be told his remaining fuel load, so the system can be configured for a paramedic to interrogate and receive up-to-date information on his patient, and pass it on to others who may need it.

Comdex: Speech technology to talk IT up

(IDG) Speech technology may steal the show at Comdex next week, with products that promise to amaze even the most high-tech weary of attendees. Star Trek technology will come to life when ViA demonstrates its version of a universal translator. Similar to the devices used by the members of the United Federation of Planets, ViA's device is partially funded by the U.S. Navy and performs voice-to-voice translation with a wearable PC, headset, and speaker. While ViA's device can not translate Klingon to Romulan, it does interpret seven other languages including Mandarin Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish. Users can talk into the microphone in one language and the translated words will come out through a speaker in the second language. "We believe this solution demonstrates the value of fully distributed wearable processing," said Dave Carroll, chairman of ViA.

Speech technology is everywhere
December 3, 1998
Web posted at: 12:00 PM EST by Ephraim Schwartz From...
(IDG) Speech technology in 1999 will be found on your phone, at your hand, and in your car as companies begin to sense a growing market opportunity. Although the first help desk company to voice-enable its application via the phone has not stepped forward yet, industry analysts are expecting it to happen in 1999. Lucent Technologies and Unisys announced last week a partnership that will combine the Lucent speech engine with the Unisys speech toolkits for use in call centers and help desks among other applications. The results of this partnership may come as early as 1999, according to one analyst. "These things always require one pioneer," said Bill Meisel, president of TMA Associates, in Tarzana, Calif., a speech technology research company. "I expect it to happen next year."

Accessibility Suite Training Premier Assistive Technology is pleased to announce the formation of Premier University. At Premier University, we have open enrollment to formal training classes on all of our technologies. We realize that due to budget cuts, many school districts have eliminated out-of-state training, so we are bringing the training to a city near you. Click Here For More Details Our Mission
To enrich and improve the lives of millions of people worldwide by making information truly accessible through the use of affordable technology. Company Profile From its origins in 1998, Premier Assistive Technology has established a mission to provide assistive technology to persons with disabilities and give them access to today's technologically oriented world. In targeting those objectives, we are rapidly finding that our technologies are beginning to reach far beyond the boundaries that have historically been framed by the visually disabled software market to other emerging areas. We have developed a complete suite of products that address "reading, writing and information transfer" needs for individuals with visual, cognitive and mobility challenges. Applications for learning disabilities, general literacy and English as a Second Language can also be well-served using existing and emerging assistive technologies.
