Gentoo
I went to #gentoo and asked them how you could deal with non-free packages in Gentoo. I was surprised to learn that Gentoo includes some non-free packages which aren't available in source form, and therefore that Gentoo isn't self-hosting. I'm removing it from the page unless someone can rectify. Chealer 00:32, 2005 Apr 3 (UTC)
Aren't the non-free ones also non-core/non-essential? If so, then Gentoo could certainly be added to the list. TheParanoidOne 23:39, 8 Apr 2005 (UTC)

self-hosting personality
This personality provides very basic services. On boot, it starts up card services, and loads enough modules to talk to a microdrive. It also sets up ppp and runs sshd. That's really about it. It's (relatively) small - there's a fair bit of bulk in the kernel modules, which it has a full set of. It does nothing whatsoever with the iPAQ's UI elements. This is purely a serial or network accessible personality. Download: Mikolaj J. Habryn Last modified: Wed Apr 4 20:39:44 EST 2001

PDE Dynamic Classpath
PDE Dynamic Classpaths FAQ
The following list of frequently asked questions is compiled for the benefit of Eclipse plug-in developers that would like to try out the new PDE dynamic classpaths while self-hosting. Q: What is classpath stability?
A:
Classpath stability is a measure of classpath change with respect to the self-hosting choice made by a developer. Ideally, classpaths should not change regardless of the complement of source projects in the workspace. Binary project self-hosting offers good classpath stability, where all classpaths contain only project references. External plug-in self-hosting provides less stable classpaths. They are still stable with respect to the local install location of the external libraries, but the list of plug-ins as source projects must remain constant for all the members of a team in order to share them via a repository. Since 2.0, added plug-in version to the plug-in location on the file system further reduced the classpath stability when external plug-ins were used. Q: If binary projects offer better classpath stability, why not use them all the time?

Can you recommend a good hosting service? is a question I sometimes get asked, and one that comes up pretty frequently on some of the mailing lists I subscribe to. Along with the cost and how much RAM/diskspace/bandwidth the hosting service provides, the main criteria seems to be what PHP/MySQL/etc. versions they run, and what maximum number of e-mail addresses/domains/databases/etc. they limit you to. When asked for my opinion (and sometimes even when not asked for it), I've started suggesting to people that if they really want complete control over their sites and domains, they should host them themselves.

Over the past year or so there has been a growing trend of post from users who want to host their sites on their own systems.
I think it would be good to hear from people who have actually done or are doing this. I don't think we should just say yes or no, but offer as much practical advice as possible and voice our options on this matter. It has to be said that in 95% of cases hosting with a web hosting company is by far the best option available. When you use a hosting co you aren't just buying disk space and bandwidth you're buying their experience and their expertise. Web hosting companies handle the complexed issues involved with server administration on a day to day basis and are generally very able to provide a high level of service and availability. I took the plunge about a year ago and began hosting my site from home. for me the entire outcome was based on a financial decision. The project I was working on would involve using at least 2 fairly high speck dedicated servers. The cost of leasing the boxes was just to high for what is no more that a hobby project.

A Free/Open Source Project Hosting (FOSPHost) site the infrastructure that supports and co-ordinates the development of Free/Open Source software projects on the Internet. One of the most famous example is SourceForge. Nevertheless, it can be as simple as a mailing list and a FTP server to download the components of the project.
External Hosting and Self-hosting
FOSPHost sites can also be classified as external hosting and self-hosting. The distinction between the two is the amount of control the users of the FOSPHost site have.
  • Self-hosting sites - the users can adjust the internal configuration of the services provided External hosting sites - a fixed set of services is provided with a common configuration.
Advantages for External Hosting Sites
  • More reliable than individually hosted servers ( Tools with better quality than individually hosted sites ( Decrease the startup cost of hosting an Free/Open Source Software (if the service is low cost or free) ( Decrease the workload comparing to administrating a FOSPHost site individually (
Advantages for Self-hosting Sites
  • Have control on the choice of tools hosted on-site and their configurations (
