CMU Robot Drives 200 Miles
Carnegie Mellon's Sandstorm Robot Makes Unprecedented 200-Mile Autonomous Run
From the article:
Carnegie Mellon University's autonomous robotic HUMMER Sandstorm drove an unprecedented 200 miles in seven hours without human guidance last week in preparation for the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, a 175-mile driverless desert race with a $2 million winner-take-all prize.
Sandstorm uses sensors to "see" and computers to "drive." It drove 131 laps on the 1.5-mile racecourse at the BeaveRun MotorSports Complex near Pittsburgh, Pa., on July 4. The drive was an endurance evaluation for the robot's computers, sensors and mechanical systems. The machine averaged 28 miles per hour and hit a top speed of 36 miles per hour to complete its 7-hour, 200-mile marathon.
"That doesn't sound like a big deal for a human-driven car, but it is a very big deal for the pioneering of computer-driven vehicles," said Red Team leader, Robotics Professor William L. "Red" Whittaker. "That distance, speed and duration are unprecedented for a completely autonomous machine. However, this machine and 19 others will face far more difficult conditions in the October 8 race across the Mojave Desert. posted by Clint @ 2:58 AM 0 comments

Welcome!
The Autonomous Mobile Robotics Laboratory at the University of Maryland has two active research areas. In traditional robotics , we are interested in the intelligent control of goal-based robotics and motion planning. More recently, we have begun research into new ways of designing constructive robots and new perspectives of the roles of robotics in education and in entertainment. In particular, we and our collaborators (elementary school aged children, artists, computer scientists, educators, and engineers) have created a robotic story telling environment called PETS (A Personal Electronic Teller Of Stories), in which children write stories, construct robotic animals, design emotions, and direct the robots to become actors in their narratives.

Welcome to ST Robotics
Our light industrial robot arms are low cost but serious industrial systems with remarkable software and unparalleled reliability. Their high intelligence finds them niches in the most complex tasks but they are easy to apply to any application from machine feeding to laboratory sample handling. Our aim is to provide you with as much information as possible: specs, diagrams, animations, pictures of applications, even prices - real information to help with your decision. We tell you how the software actually works, with screen shots and examples. We are the only robotics company to publish the full price list on the website.
robotics within reach
Which robot?
Our range comprises three basic formats:
R17 jointed robot arm, sometimes called revolute format is suitable for applications requiring a long reach such as machine access. This format is also referred to as anthropomorphic because of it's similarity with a human arm.
R19 cylindrical format robot arm, called so because it's workspace is a cylinder. It is ideal for workspaces on a bench and is more accurate than the R17.
R15 Cartesian format robot. This format works with linear X-Y-Z axes with additional axes as necessary. It can be almost any size and is always built to order.
