The SMAC team is interested in designing open and complex applications for which there is no algorithm known (for example, flood forecast, electronic commerce ants simulation, ...). The software solution to this kind of problem is a multi-agent system (MAS) i.e. a system composed of a great number of autonomous entities having a collective behaviour which allows to obtain the desired function. An agent is an entity immersed in an environment, it is autonomous (ability to decide of its own behaviour), it possesses some skills (know-how), some beliefs (about itself, about others and about its environment), a social attitude and means to interact with outside. The studied applications are open that is to say that unexpected changes may occur and the system must be able to adapt itself to answer them.

About the Course
This course uses LEGO beams, plates, gears, motors, a 68HC11 microcontroller board programmed in C, and various sensors to construct autonomous ( i.e., self-contained, no direct human control) robots. The first half of the course is structured exercises in practical programming, LEGO mechanics, sensor principles, and software design, all presented with a biological slantwe consider autonomous robots to be model systems for the study of animal behavior. The second half of the course is spent designing robots which can compete in an Egg Hunt competition. The 375 course is intended for undergraduates. The 475 course is intended for graduate students and advanced undergraduates; there is extra coursework (7 written lab reports, a final 10-page design paper, extra exercises, outside readings) required for graduate credit. There are no formal prerequisites. We will teach you everything you need to know.

RoboCamp 2005 Robocamp : One Day * Spring Recess * Summer
Come and Join us on various Robotics Expeditions Theme based Robotics Weekly Summer Programs focus on hands-on learning and creative playing These camps have been developed to encourage children's interests in science and technology. This is an unique opportunity to involve children in science and engineering early and well-spend their summer time. Most RoboCamp modules gear for 4th to 9th graders. We may accept 3rd graders if parents truly think they are intellectually at or above 4th grade and have the maturity in following instructions. Campers will be separated into two groups, 4th-6th graders, and 7th to 9graders.
Camp Dates One Day Mini Camp Status Sumo Robot Closed Botzilla Closed 03/28 to 04/01

home research teaching people publications ... consultancy Welcome Within these pages you will find information about Robotics at the School of Computer Science, University of Manchester, UK. Robotics at Manchester Manchester Robotics are researching into the future of robotic systems, where robots are not hidden behind cages on manufacturing lines, but are a positive factor in our everyday lives. We are developing medical robots to administer robotic physiotherapy for conditions such as stroke and cerebral palsy. If robots are to behave autonomously then they must have the capability of independent movement and 'intelligent' control strategies. Manchester robotics has a long history of developing adaptive 'intelligent' controllers for mobile robotic systems. These mobile robotic systems can be either locomoted by wheels, legs or alternative novel methods. Applications of such robots vary from urban search and rescue to planetary exploration. Robots that are in everyday contact with humans must be designed and controlled in a suitable manner. Interaction control techniques are being developed to ensure robots are of no danger to humans. Moreover, on a more subtle level, these robots must reassure and not intimidate humans. Manchester robotics is investigating robots that exhibit body language. As well as rich and diverse areas of research interest, two taught modules in robotic systems are delivered each year.
