Argonne National Laboratory
University of Chicago The Distributed Systems Laboratory (DSL) is a research and software development group within the Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division at Argonne National Laboratory and the Department of Computer Science at The University of Chicago A Grid is a persistent infrastructure that supports computation-intensive and data-intensive collaborative activities, especially when these activities span organizations. Grid computing facilitates the formation of "Virtual Organizations" for shared use of distributed computational resources. Under the leadership of Dr. Ian Foster , the DSL hosts research and development activities designed to realize the potential of "Grids" for computational science and engineering. Together with Carl Kesselman's Center for Grid Technologies at the University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute , we are co-founders of the Globus Project TM , a highly-collaborative international and multidisciplinary effort to make Grid computing a reality.

Would you like to be able to write architecture-independent but efficient parallel code? Have you tried MPI and PVM, and would like a simpler alternative? Scalable computing will, over the next few years, become the normal form of computing. Software for scalable computing will have to be fully portable across the whole range of general-purpose parallel architectures, from simple clusters of PCs to large parallel supercomputers. It will also have to be efficient, achieving optimised performance, in a predictable way, on all such architectures. The Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) model provides a discipline for the design, analysis and implementation of universal software of this kind. These pages provide an introduction to the theory and practice of BSP computing, and show how it is currently being used to produce portable parallel software for industrial applications. The WWW resources described here provide an introduction to the principles of BSP cost modeling and performance prediction. They also show how to design, analyse and implement BSP programs using the various software tools that have been developed to provide a BSP Programming Environment.

Research Theme
The goal of the Illinois Open Systems Laboratory is to develop mechanisms to simplify the development of scalable parallel, distributed and mobile computing systems. Such systems are open to interactions with their environment, must satisfy real-time constraints, and often affect physical processes. The approach of the laboratory is multidisciplinary research is conducted in foundational models of concurrency, programming languages, and middleware Research in the laboratory is based on the actor model of concurrent computation ( see papers on foundations ). Actors are inherently autonomous computational objects which interact with each other by sending messages. Each actor has a unique name the activity of different actors is potentially parallel. Actor systems are highly dynamic: new actors may be created and names of actors exchanged. The model is very general: processes, sensors and actuators can be modelled as actors. Over the last decade, research in the group has developed a meta-architectural model for middleware. The model has been formalized and applied to dependable computing and software architecture. Programming abstractions have been developed to represent coordination constraints real-time and requirements. The Actor model has been extended to explicitly model mobility and bounded resources, thus providing a powerful formalism for

£1.5 billion lost annually in potential return on British science
The UK is losing around £1.5 billion annually in the potential impact of its scientific research expenditure, according to one of the key figures in the global open access publishing movement. Professor Stevan Harnad, Moderator of the American Scientist Open Access Forum and Professor of Cognitive Science at the University of Southampton's School of Electronics and Computer Science, has calculated the potential return on the investment in scientific research findings that are being lost to the UK each year through the limitations of the current academic publishing environment.
