Pete Finnigan

Introduction This article will introduce the reader to the basics of auditing an Oracle database. Oracle's RDBMS is a functionally rich product and there are a number of auditing alternatives available to the reader. Because auditing Oracle is such a huge subject, doing all of it justice would take an entire book, so this paper will cover the basics of why, when and how to conduct an audit. It will also use a couple of good example cases to illustrate how useful Oracle audit can be to an organization. All of the sample SQL listed in this paper can be downloaded from the author's Web site at http://www.petefinnigan.com/papers/audit.sql The Issues There are a number of basic issues that should be considered when contemplating using Oracle's auditing features. These are as follows:
  • Why is audit needed in Oracle?
Is this a strange question? Well, lots of companies don't actually use the internal audit features of Oracle. Or, when they do use them, they are so overwhelmed with choice, they turn on everything for good measure, then realise there is far too much output to read and digest so they quickly turn it all off again. It is quite common to use firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS) and other security tools to determine if the network or operating system is being misused or abused. So why not audit what users are doing to the "crown jewels" of an organization, the data. Oracle audit can help detect unauthorized access and internal abuse of the data held in the database.

What is PHP and what's it got to do with Oracle?
PHP is a recursive acronym for "PHP Hypertext Preprocessor". It is an open source, interpretive, HTML centric, server side scripting language. PHP is especially suited for Web development and can be embedded into HTML pages. PHP is comparable to languages such as JSP (Java Server Pages) and Oracle's PSP (PL/SQL Server Pages). This FAQ describes how PHP interacts with the Oracle Database. It assumes that the reader has PHP installed and working. To test if PHP is working, create a simple PHP document, say hello.php: Execute hello.php from command line (php hello.php) or open it from a web browser (http://localhost/hello.php) to see the output. If it's not working, PHP is not correctly installed and this FAQ will not help you. Note that current versions of Oracle's HTTP Server (Apache) does not ship with PHP (mod_php) pre-installed and that Oracle does not support mod_php or the language itself; however, it may support configurations that include mod_php. Future releases of Oracle iAS (Internet Application Server) will support PHP and include instructions on how to install and use PHP.

ORCA (designed by Dr. Blair Zajac) and RRD TOOL (created by Tobi Oetiker) access statistical data collected by orca-oracle to generate up-to-date graphs and populate them to a designated web site. Description There are many types of Oracle database fragmentation. Some are harmful and some are not. An active Oracle database will naturally foster harmful database fragmentation unless the DBA takes proactive application design and space management steps. This paper addresses tablespace freespace, segment, data block, index leaf block, and row fragmentation. Each fragmentation type is described in detail along with how to detect the fragmentation, how to quantify its intensity, what its performance and administration affects are, and how to resolve only the harmful fragmentation. Various scripts are used throughout the paper and references are made to publicly available tools.
    Updates
    * This paper has not been updated (yet) for 9i and 10g. There are lots of fragemtation related changes in 10g, but still, this paper should be very valuable. Craig.

eSpatial announces compatibility with ORACLE Database 10G
New spatial features within Oracle Database 10g fully supported by eSpatial Dublin, Ireland - February 17, 2004: eSpatial, a leading spatial information management company, today announced that its iSMART product suite is compatible with Oracle Database 10g. As part of the Oracle 10g beta program, eSpatial tested iSMART, its flagship geospatial product for business applications, with Oracle 10g and is ready to upgrade customers from Oracle9i to Oracle Database 10g technology, which is now available. "eSpatial is one of our top EMEA partner organizations to have successfully beta tested Oracle Database 10g," commented Bertram Mandel, senior director, alliances and channels, Oracle Europe, Middle East and Africa. "Spatial technology is a focus area for Oracle and we are pleased that eSpatial is one of the first geospatial information management companies to harness the power of Oracle Database 10g. It will simplify database administration and management and enhance eSpatial's customers' experience." eSpatial's iSMART spatial application development and deployment platform has been developed to provide embedded spatial capabilities in enterprise applications using standard IT technologies including Oracle's Spatial database and Oracle Application Server. This was the case for releases based on Oracle8i, Oracle9i and now Oracle Database 10g. iSMART provides out-of-the-box support for advanced features such as web-based spatial editing, occasionally connected offline spatial interaction and Live Feeds which work seamlessly with Oracle Database10g.
