operating system Last modified: Friday, January 04, 2002 The most important program that runs on a computer . Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs. Operating systems perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard , sending output to the display screen , keeping track of files and directories on the disk , and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers For large systems, the operating system has even greater responsibilities and powers. It is like a traffic cop it makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other. The operating system is also responsible for

...stuff that counts ;)
The Internet Operating System Counter is a survey about operating system usage on the Internet. Host addresses are collected and queried for their operating system using queso Queso is the Hispanic shortcut for "Que Sistema Operativo?" which translates into "which operating system?"
For this OS count the RIPE Host Count was used to collect host addresses. Also host addresses of the .edu domain were used. (.edu is own host collection done with Eric Wassenaar's nameserver query tool host. ). All host names beginning with 'ftp.', 'news.' and 'www.' (case insensitive) were queried. Data collection was performed between 08. April 99 and 19. April 99 The current April count has processed hosts addresses.

The history of the development of Unix at Bell Labs, and how Multics was an important stepping stone.
http://www.bell-labs.com/history/unix/
The Creation of the UNIX Operating System
After three decades of use, the UNIX* computer operating system from Bell Labs is still regarded as one of the most powerful, versatile, and flexible operating systems (OS) in the computer world. Its popularity is due to many factors, including its ability to run a wide variety of machines, from micros to supercomputers, and its portability all of which led to its adoption by many manufacturers. Like another legendary creature whose name also ends in 'x,' UNIX rose from the ashes of a multi-organizational effort in the early 1960s to develop a dependable timesharing operating system. The joint effort was not successful, but a few survivors from Bell Labs tried again, and what followed was a system that offers its users a work environment that has been described as "of unusual simplicity, power, and elegance...." The system also fostered a distinctive approach to software design solving a problem by interconnecting simpler tools, rather than creating large monolithic application programs. Its development and evolution led to a new philosophy of computing, and it has been a never-ending source of both challenges and joy to programmers around the world.

    MIT Exokernel Operating System
    Putting the Application in Control.
An operating system is interposed between applications and the physical hardware. Therefore, its structure has a dramatic impact on the performance and the scope of applications that can be built on it. Since its inception, the field of operating systems has been attempting to identify an appropriate structure: previous attempts include the familiar monolithic and micro-kernel operating systems as well as more exotic language-based and virtual machine operating systems. Exokernels dramatically depart from this previous work. An exokernel eliminates the notion that an operating system should provide abstractions on which applications are built. Instead, it concentrates solely on securely multiplexing the raw hardware: from basic hardware primitives, application-level libraries and servers can directly implement traditional operating system abstractions, specialized for appropriateness and speed.
Structure of an exokernel system. Applications use their own Library Operating System (LibOS) which in turn use the exokernel to allocate and deallcate hardware resources.
