A History of Apple's Operating Systems
    Introduction
Mac OS X is a unique operating system in that it represents a rather successful coming together of paradigms, ideologies, and technologies that have usually resisted each other in the past. It is a result of the trials and tribulations of Apple and NeXT, as well as their user and developer communities. Mac OS X is perhaps one of the best examples of how a capable system can result through the direct or indirect efforts of corporations, academic and research communities, the Open Source and Free Software movements, and even individuals. Apple has been around since 1976, and many accounts of its history have been told. If the story of Apple as a company is fascinating, so is the "technical" story of Apple's operating systems. This document discusses operating systems that Apple has created in the past, and many that it tried to create. Through this discussion, we will come across several technologies the confluence of which eventually led to Mac OS X. An important goal of the discussion is to better understand the reasons, and if possible, the rationale behind Mac OS X and its important components. This, in turn, will be helpful in understanding and appreciating the system as it is today. My approach in this discussion is to have somewhat high magnitudes of the depth and breadth of historical coverage, as long as I believe the discussion is interesting and relevant from a system design perspective

    A CATALOG OF OPERATING SYSTEMS
This is a classified, alphabetic listing of most operating systems, past and present, that have been distributed commercially or reported in the English-language literature. This extensive catalog is included because we believe that for the serious student who wishes to understand OS implementation, there is no substitute for studying a variety of actual systems. Most of the systems in this catalog have something to teach, and in many cases the best explanations are given by designers or users in the published literaure. The listing attempts to be as comprehensive as possible. However, it does not always distinguish closely-related versions or releases of the same OS, or reimplementations of substantially the same OS on different computers. Listed systems are limited to those which have actually been implemented (although perhaps only once), directly control the CPU hardware, and are general-purpose, at least within broad application areas (including business and real-time control). The operating systems are classified roughly into fourteen categories. Each category is explained briefly at the beginning of the section. The classification is somewhat arbitrary; many OSs could reasonably be placed in several classes. Those that are difficult to classify are placed in the miscellaneous section at the end.

    Programme
The biennial ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles is the world's premier forum for researchers, developers, programmers, vendors and teachers of operating system technology. Academic and industrial participants present research and experience papers that cover the full range of theory and practice. The symposium will be held at the Grand Hotel in Brighton, England, a regency period seaside town with easy access from London. An Invitation from the Program Chair Dear Colleague, SOSP ‘05 continues the conference's tradition of presenting the best innovative work in the systems software area, taking a broad view of what the area encompasses. We believe that this year's conference contains some of the most original, intriguing, and important work in the field today — work that the entire community, including systems practitioners as well as researchers, will find both stimulating and useful. SOSP ‘05 drew a highly competitive selection from a large collection of diverse, original work submitted by authors internationally. The selection criteria was tough: out of a record-setting 155 submissions, only 20 were accepted, and even these were subjected to an intensive feedback and shepherding process before the final acceptance. Every one of them is an exceptional paper and, jointly, they form a program of creative, well-developed work. These are papers that open new and innovative areas, offer unexpected insights, and will set the stage for years of future work.
