Unfortunately, I no longer have time to maintain the webpages on operating system projects. In fact, I haven't updated the entries on the original page for well over 2 years, and it seems unlikely that I will be able to resume doing so in the near future. Several other pages, however, contain more up-to-date information on operating systems. These include: Back to Patrick Bridges' Home Page

MINIX INFORMATION SHEET
WHAT IS MINIX 2.0
MINIX is a free UNIX clone that is available with all the source code. Due to its small size, microkernel-based design, and ample documentation, it is well suited to people who want to run a UNIX-like system on their personal computer and learn about how such systems work inside. It is quite feasible for a person unfamiliar with operating system internals to understand nearly the entire system with a few months of use and study. MINIX has evolved over the years, so several versions exist. Two of these are still current. The rest are obsolete. The current versions are: MINIX 2.0 (Intel CPUs from 8088 to Pentium)
MINIX 1.5 (Intel, Macintosh, Amiga, Atari, SPARC) MINIX FAQs exist for both IBM PC hardware and Macintoshes. MINIX 2.0 can be compiled in either 16-bit mode or 32-mode, depending on compile time flags. For 32-bit mode, a 386, 486, or Pentium is required.

CVS Write Access Resources Bochs History Bochs Links Related Links Screen Shots Welcome to the Bochs IA-32 Emulator Project Bochs is a highly portable open source IA-32 (x86) PC emulator written in C++, that runs on most popular platforms. It includes emulation of the Intel x86 CPU, common I/O devices, and a custom BIOS. Currently, Bochs can be compiled to emulate a 386, 486, Pentium, Pentium Pro or AMD64 CPU, including optional MMX, SSE, SSE2 and 3DNow! instructions. Bochs can be compiled and used in a variety of modes, some which are still in development. The 'typical' use of bochs is to provide complete x86 PC emulation, including the x86 processor, hardware devices, and memory. This allows you to run OS's and software within the emulator on your workstation, much like you have a machine inside of a machine. For instance, let's say your workstation is a Unix/X11 workstation, but you want to run Win'95 applications. Bochs will allow you to run Win 95 and associated software on your Unix/X11 workstation, displaying a window on your workstation, simulating a monitor on a PC. Bochs 2.2.1 released on July 8, 2005

Introduction
Early computers lacked operating systems (see History of operating systems ). A human operator would manually load and run programs. When programs were developed to load and run other programs, it was natural to draw their name from the human job they replaced. Today, the term is most often used colloquially to mean all the software which "comes with" a computer system before any applications are installed. The operating system ensures that other applications are able to use memory, input and output devices and have access to the file system . If multiple applications are running, the operating system schedules these such that all processes have sufficient processor time where possible and do not interfere with each other.
