Making the Macintosh: Technology and Culture in Silicon Valley
Welcome
"Making the Macintosh" is an online project documenting the history of the Macintosh computer. The Macintosh stands at a cusp in the history of computing and Silicon Valley: it brought together (and sometimes transformed) a number of technical and conceptual threads in computing that developed in the 1960s and 1970s, but it also was responsible for sparking new movements in computing. This project collects and publishes primary material on the Macintosh's development and early reception. It draws on the extensive holdings of the Stanford University Library's Department of Special Collections, the personal papers of engineers and technical writers involved in the Macintosh project, and interviews conducted for the project. Read an interview with Susan Kare , icon designer on the Macintosh.

Earning Apple support for the OpenMac projects
Overview
OpenMac refers to the multiple efforts at porting different flavors of UNIX to the Macintosh and PowerMacintosh platforms, primarily representing the Linux for PowerPC and MacBSD projects. In the past, the OpenMac teams have seen their efforts blocked by the lack of accessible information for Apple's low-level hardware interfaces. This has led to stalled projects and generally negative feelings about something most interested parties feel strongly about. This collection is intended to spur relations between the OpenMac projects and Apple Computer. We hope to accomplish this by documenting our needs, and presenting them with factual and compelling arguments for supporting the work. To this end, we have been in contact with Apple employees at various levels, and are currently building summary documents to circulate within Apple. Although it started as a document regarding OpenMac OS developer issues, this page has become a public bulletin board for our progress. Please keep in mind, though, that this is not the forum for asking about using or beta- testing Linux and NetBSD. For more information about finding, installing, and using these products, check out the reference links at the end of this page.

Apple's current Macintosh line includes a series of desktops ( iMac G5 Mac mini Power Mac G5 and eMac ), notebooks ( iBook G4 and PowerBook G4 ), and servers ( Xserve G5 and Xserve RAID ). These systems are mainly targeted towards the home consumer, education, and creative professional markets. Though the Unix -based Xserve G5 has enabled Apple to gain exposure to the enterprise market. In fact, the Xserve RAID is certified to run on the Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Red Hat Enterprise Linux , and Novell NetWare platforms. All of Apple's Macintosh systems are designed to run the Macintosh operating system, which is a Unix-based system developed by Apple. The current release of the Macintosh operating system is Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger Ever since the release of the original 128k Macintosh in January 1984, Apple has portrayed the Macintosh as being on the cutting edge of personal computing. For instance, the Macintosh is regarded as being the first personal computer to popularize the use of the graphical user interface at a time when most computers used an operating system with a command line interface Today Apple differentiates their Macintosh line from the competition through the use of innovative industrial design and packaging their systems with the easy-to-use Mac OS X . To compliment the Macintosh line, Apple also develops a series of digital media applications (collectively the

Mac IRC Clients by Joseph Lo aka Jolo
updated Jul 18, 2004 Snak 5.x home page screen cap This client is what I usually recommend new users try first, because it is the most rich in features and has been actively developed since the '90s, with dozens of updates over the past few years while the traditional gold standard Ircle has essentially stood still. Snak appeals to people who prefer a streamlined interface without sacrificing all the latest bells and whistles. Everything for each channel is contained in one window. The channel list feature is particularly fast and easy to use (unlike Ircle). Very easy to set up and configure. Supports both the scripting language from the classic ircII client for *nix (UNIX, Linux, etc.) shell access acounts, so you can tap into the wealth of existing ircII scripts, as well as Ircle-style Applescript scripts. Supports multiple connections, and for each connection, uses ircII-style server lists which will automatically try the next server in a list until it succeeds (Ircle only allows one server to be defined for each connection). Guardian feature permits adult control, for what that's worth (Ircle has none). Excellent built-in help menu, balloon help, and bundled help manual (Ircle has none). $25 shareware is a great value and an example of how shareware really can work.
