Unix systems filiation. Linux is a computer operating system and its kernel . It is one of the most prominent examples of free software and of open-source development: unlike proprietary operating systems such as Windows or Mac OS , all of its underlying source code is available to the public and anyone can freely use, modify, and redistribute it. In the narrowest sense, the term Linux refers to the Linux kernel , but it is commonly used to describe entire Unix-like operating systems ( also known as GNU/Linux ) that are based on the Linux kernel combined with libraries and tools from the GNU project. Most broadly, a Linux distribution bundles large quantities of application software with the core system, and provides more user-friendly installation and upgrades. Initially, Linux was primarily developed and used by individual enthusiasts. Since then, Linux has gained the support of major corporations such as IBM Hewlett-Packard and Novell for use in servers and is gaining popularity in the desktop market. Proponents and analysts attribute this success to its

Celler beware? Cell-phone blockade
Mon, 25 Jan 1999 11:50:57 -0500 (EST) A GTE Wireless cellular tower in Crystal River, Florida, was rendered incommunicado whenever Calvin Simpson used his cell phone in his motor-home park, beginning on 4 Jan 1999. His phone was apparently tying up a control channel used to direct calls, and blocking all (other?) calls. After tracking him down (it took 10 days), GTE gave him a different phone while they tried to find out why it was causing the interference! 108. BASTILLE-LINUX
Attempts to harden (tighten the configuration of) a Red Hat or Mandrake linux installation.
http://www.bastille-linux.org/
The Bastille Hardening program "locks down" an operating system, proactively configuring the system for increased security and decreasing its susceptibility to compromise. Bastille can also assess a system's current state of hardening, granularly reporting on each of the security settings with which it works. Bastille currently supports the Red Hat (Fedora Core, Enterprise, and Numbered/Classic), SUSE, Debian, Gentoo, and Mandrake distributions, along with HP-UX and Mac OS X. Bastille's focuses on letting the system's user/administrator choose exactly how to harden the operating system. In its default hardening mode, it interactively asks the user questions, explains the topics of those questions, and builds a policy based on the user's answers. It then applies the policy to the system. In its assessment mode, it builds a report intended to teach the user about available security settings as well as inform the user as to which settings have been tightened. Bastille broke new ground by working to educate users about security, and help them make balanced, informed choices. Many users have found Bastille's secondary goal of educational just as useful as its primary goal of system hardening, leading some organizations to make an interactive Bastille hardening session part of their training regimen for new system administrators. In this spirit, Bastille can allow the user to run through the entire interactive portion without applying the chosen changes. Bastille has become a vital part of the security hardening space. It's the most used hardening tool for Linux and HP-UX and is shipped by the vendor on SuSE, Debian, Gentoo and HP-UX. It is covered in all of the major books on Linux Security and has been the subject of a number of articles. Most recently, the

The Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) provides audio and MIDI functionality to the Linux operating system. ALSA has the following significant features:
  • Efficient support for all types of audio interfaces, from consumer soundcards to professional multichannel audio interfaces. Fully modularized sound drivers. SMP and thread-safe design. User space library ( alsa-lib ) to simplify application programming and provide higher level functionality. Support for the older OSS API, providing binary compatibility for most OSS programs.
  • ALSA is released under the GPL (GNU General Public license) and the LGPL (GNU Lesser General Public License). We need users to use, test and provide feedback, programmers to work on low level drivers, writers to extend and improve our documentation, and application developers who choose to use ALSA as the basis for their programs.

    News:
    LRP == R.I.P. (1997-2002)
With great pain, I must now state:
The operating system that helped to create the embedded Linux marketplace, the Linux Router Project (LRP), is dead.
As of January of this year I have finally accepted the fact I will likely never be able to develop LRP into the operating system it could have been. A full 6 months later I'm forcing myself to update this page to reflect this. It is not an easy thing to give up on your life's work.
I am also now semi-retired as a computer engineer. Aside from my general disgust at the computing industry and what the Internet has become, scrambling around for scrapes of work and praying for the next good money project that eventually ends suddenly in a few months, just isn't keeping food on the table. I've looked quite a bit for some stable work, but plumbers make more hourly then Sys Admins in South Florida. Either I move to California (never!) or move on. I am now reserved to do the latter. With LRP remaining an unachievable goal I don't even feel much desire to work with computers anymore.

The Continuing Adventures of Christopher Shepherd
    September 02, 2005

Shown at left is our nation's executive on Tuesday, August 30, 2005. By Tuesday, levees in New Orleans had already been breached and the city was filling up with water, and the humanitarian situation was beginning to grow more dire.
How could the levees have gotten into this situation? Part of the answer of course, lies in geography; the city is precariously positioned no matter how one rolls the dice. But here's another part of the answer:
Shortly after the attacks, the Army Corps of Engineers found itself facing deep cuts in funding for the largest flood control and drainage program in the New Orleans area. In the first full budget year after the attacks, the Bush administration funded the Southeast Louisiana Urban Flood Control Project, or SELA, at only 20 percent of the Corps' request of $100 million. In fiscal year 2004, the White House funding came in at 17 percent of the request.
For each of these years, Congress, with the support of the Louisiana delegation, appropriated more money, but funding still came in far below the requirements. Work was delayed. Contractors worked without pay. Whole projects were put off. Local project managers complained that New Orleans was competing with the war in Iraq for funding. "It appears that the money has been moved in the president's budget to handle Homeland Security and the war in Iraq," Walter Maestri, the emergency management chief for Jefferson Parish, told the Times-Picayune in 2004. Of the $500 million requested for levees, pumping stations and new drainage canals between 2001 and 2005, only $249 million passed out of Congress. As recently as March, the Corps warned in a briefing memo that the funding shortfalls "will significantly increase the cost of the project, delay project completion and delay project benefits."
