Published by Chances are, of course, that your configuration is slightly different than this. However, as long as you are still running Linux on an Intel-based system, this procedure will work for you without modification. If you're running Linux on an Alpha or Sparc system, though, you may even be able to modify this procedure to fit your needs. (The difficulty will come when you attempt to boot your Sparc from an Intel-based floppy!) How it works While researching information for this chapter, most Linux administrators gave the typical bare-metal recovery answer: install a minimal OS and recover on top of it. This answer presents the same problems for Linux systems that it does to other versions of UNIX. It takes too long, you could run into open file conflicts, and it is difficult to document and recover operating system customizations. Like the other bare-metal recovery procedures in this book, this procedure does not require a reinstallation of the operating system in order to recover it. It is based on a homegrown procedure, which breaks down into six major steps, and will work with any Intel-based Linux distribution.

FreeS/WAN's kernel configuration option, CONFIG_IPSEC, has been changed to CONFIG_KLIPS, due to a name conflict with 2.6 IPsec. This breaks "make oldgo" on any kernel version, unless a corresponding change is made by hand to the kernel's .config file. KLIPS modules generated for 2.4 kernels via "make module" are now created in the modobj subdirectory, instead of linux/net/ipsec. The "make minstall" target has been updated, but users accustomed to a manual install take note. KLIPS now permits DNS packets out on UDP and TCP port 53. All support for transport mode has been removed.

Dern From... (IDG) On February 15, 1999, computer users who didn't want the Microsoft operating system that came bundled with their notebook or desktop computer will ask for a refund. In the San Francisco Bay Area, users are being urged to meet, bearing their original disks, manuals, and certificates of authenticity (and, if possible, the computer itself or printouts showing that Windows is no longer installed) at the Microsoft office in Foster City, CA, to ask for their refund. Elsewhere, users of Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and other operating systems are being urged to make this the day they write in for a refund. The informal initiative, currently named Windows Refund Day, is the result of growing unhappiness among computer users. Finding themselves unable to buy computers from mainstream vendors with either an alternative or no operating system installed, and forced to pay the "Microsoft tax" for copies of Windows 95/98/NT they don't intend to use, a number of users have resorted, some successfully, to requesting a refund. Some time after I got back from Pluto and learned to do nutty things like walk and shower standing up, Cassie and I sued his ass. We settled for a pittance of the total amount we'd filed for. And our lawyer gets a third. Now that we're divorcing, a common theme among couples with a partner who shuffered a brain injury, we need to figure out what to do with the scraps of cash little fucknose is supposed to send me. I know that Cassie and I will be able to work out an amicable arrangement. That's what a collaborative divorce is all about. That's not why I write this.
