Security Bug Chronology
The goal for the JDK is to enable browsers to run untrusted applets in a trusted environment. Our approach is to be conservative at first, and to add functionality when it can be added securely. The intent is to prevent applets from inspecting or changing files on the client file system. Also, the intent is to prevent applets from using network connections to circumvent file protections or people's expectations of privacy. JDK 1.1 provides the basic technology for loading and authenticating signed classes. This enables browsers to run trusted applets in a trusted environment. This does not make obselete the need to run untrusted applets in a secure way. In the release following JDK 1.1, we will provide tools for finer-grained control of flexible security policies. See the chronology page to check on the status of security-related bugs.

Welcome, noble netsurfer! Why the asterisk? Because Sun Microsystems, Inc. does not allow third-party sites to use the word "Java" in the title. There is no such restriction for domain names, however. The material on this site has been organized into six categories:
Intro. This page, which outlines the contents of the site. Artwork. This only has a few scattered items yet. Applets. My growing collection of home-made Java programs. Feedback. A list of Frequently Asked Questions and answers. Goals. A fairly extensive outline of what I want to accomplish. Links. This should be pretty much self-explanatory. In order to protect myself from e-mail spam, I have no textual references to my address on this site just the graphical representation of text you see in the bottom right corner. Automated address-hunting programs are unable to read such information, but human visitors should have no problems with it.

Java Last modified: Tuesday, September 21, 2004 A high-level programming language developed by Sun Microsystems . Java was originally called OAK, and was designed for handheld devices and set-top boxes. Oak was unsuccessful so in 1995 Sun changed the name to Java and modified the language to take advantage of the burgeoning World Wide Web Java is an object-oriented language similar to C++ , but simplified to eliminate language features that cause common programming errors. Java source code files (files with a .java extension) are compiled into a format called bytecode (files with a .class extension), which can then be executed by a Java

Great Lakes Software Symposium this Weekend
I'll be attending the Great Lakes Software Symposium this weekend in the Chicago suburbs. This will be my third year attending this conference and, if you haven't attended before, I highly recommend doing so. Each session only has 20-50 attendees, so you can ask questions and expect a cogent answer from the presenter. And the topics are bleeding edge but without the corporate marketing: Expect a lot of open source coverage. See you there.

    132. Making Sense Of Java
A beginner's FAQ aimed at people who know almost nothing about java.
    http://www.disordered.org/Java-QA.html
There is as much misinformation about Java as there is information. On this page I have listed some common claims and beliefs about Java, along with a description of how accurate the claims are and where they go astray: Java is a language for writing web pages; it's like HTML and VRML Java is easy to learn and use, unlike C, C++ and other programming languages ... Java will replace C++ as the language of choice This is not a tutorial on Java ; at best it's an effort to respond to the wild claims made about Java in the press and companies' marketing literature. For more information and commentary, take a look at Marty Hall's Java resource site.
Java is a language for writing web pages; it's like HTML and VRML
Java isn't a page description language like HTML. It's a programming language. Description languages specify content and placement; programming languages describe a process for generating a result. Where there is generally a direct mapping between an HTML description of a document and the result, the relationship between a Java program and its result is likely to be more complex. It's a little like the difference between a list of square roots of numbers from zero to 10 and a program to calculate the list. Here's an HTML table of square roots:
    sqrt(1) = 1
    sqrt(2) = 1.41421

(you can also reach me via www.LarsAppel.de , as I am no longer at the hp response center) On this page you can find several pieces of software that I was able to port to MPE/iX, the "legacy" operating system of the HP 3000 line of computers. This is not your parent's HP 3000 any more! It has evolved over the last 25+ years and still remained extremely compatible to itself. How many other platforms do you know, that can run 10 or 20 year old programs, some even written for a CPU architecture that predates PA-RISC, in most cases without any changes or even recompiling? And all this side by side with Posix based client-server applications like Apache or Samba and modern object-oriented programming languages like Java? But better don't let me get on my "Cinderella" or "Sleeping Beauty" soapbox ;-) Please notice that I ported the freeware available on this page to MPE/iX because I had some personal need to have it available on MPE/iX or sometimes also just for fun or out of curiousity. It worked fine for me but I did not perform extensive testing. I'm sharing it here in case you might also find it useful (and don't want to reinvent that wheel). Feel free to pick it up and use it, but be aware that you do this at your own risk and that this software is totally unsupported. Don't blame me (or anybody else) if something doesn't work as expected or even causes damage! Also have a look at the license files that come with each package (typically the GNU General Public License) to get an idea what you may or may not do with the software.

    • Pruned all the bad links that I could find.
    • Speed : more on reusing objects, avoiding expensive Java constructs and data structures, and the two types of switch
    • Linpack : why the optimized version is slower under modern JITs.
    • Compilers : commercial source-code optimizer.
