Yesterday ZigBee alliance showcased its products in Oslo, attended by Ethernet inventor Bob Metcalfe, who is an investor in one of the leading ZigBee chip providers, Ember. The day before, Zensys held an event in Copenhagen where they showcased their rather more established wireless technology, Z-Wave. It could open your garage door, switch on your hot tub, detect burglars, or keep an eye on your frail grandparents.

Home Automation: The Geeks Holy Grail
by Neil Ticktin, Publisher, MacTech Magazine
    STAR TREK
OK... I admit it. I'm one of those closet geeks that looks forward to the day of having "Star Trek" level of control of my surroundings. And, given what we saw on the last MacTech reader survey, most of you feel the same way I do (actually, nearly 80% of you). With this article, we're going to take an initial, and broad, look at HA and how you can have the "home of tomorrow" today. Of course, the centerpiece of this is... your Mac. One caveat up front: this article is so broad that if you aren't interested in the part you are reading... just skip to the next part, it'll be about something different. What do you want to accomplish?

I have control of lights, appliances and fans etc. from either a web interface or RF controllers (wall mounted and handheld) and the Perl based Misterhouse package allows me to build up macros and base events on various inputs such as whether I am at home or not. It even sends a text message to my mobile phone if someone presses the doorbell when I am out! Temperature sensors allow the home automation system to turn the fan and soon the heating on and off depending on the environment. CCTV, CallerID, voicemail, whole house audio and MP3 playback and much more also play a hand in making the automated home, read on for a more detailed explanation.

    Home Automation Systems
Since the mid-1980s, several major participants in the housing, large appliance, and electrical control industries have pursued the idea of an integrated home automation system. Ideally, such a system monitors and operates many different functions within the home. Lighting, heating, cooling, ventilation, appliances, entertainment, and security can all be operated automatically. The homeowner programs, controls, or monitors the house by a computer or even by telephone. These systems have many similarities with building automation systems used in commercial buildings. Systems for the residential market, however, require mass production and simple installation before they will begin to make major inroads to the residential market. A minimal amount of custom engineering and installation is desirable. In many cases, automatic control is economically justified for only a few functions.
    Types of Systems
There are three types of home automation controls: individual control devices, distributed-control systems, and centrally controlled systems. Individual devices control only one appliance or function. Examples include programmable setback thermostats, motion detectors, occupancy sensors, photocell lighting controls, and timers. Individual control devices have a wide variety of successful applications. These range from outdoor lighting to security sensors. The familiar television remote control unit often falls into this category. Remote control devices are not truly home automation devices, however, since they require conscious thought and human effort (however small) to operate.

By Bill Howard One of life's ironies is that those of us who can dim the living-room lights and switch the stereo to soft jazz at the press of a single button are probably the geeks who can't get a date and take advantage of the romantic atmosphere. ADVERTISEMENT No less an authority than the Queer Eye team recommends dimmed lights everywhere. And that is the core of home automation today: making the remote dimming of lights and switching of appliances work for as many people as possible. New technologies and products over the next year will make automation something to think about even if you don't safety-pin your eyeglasses' hinge. The old faithful of home automation is X10, which dates to the late 1970s; its products can be found at Radio Shack and www.x10.com

    Understanding Home Automation
By now you’ve heard the term "home automation" bandied about in the mainstream media, over the office water cooler, and even mentioned in a few sitcoms. In fact, one study shows that 60 percent of the country admits to being "familiar" with the term, while less than half that number reports knowing "what it is"! That’s not surprising. Even industry experts define the term differently. A home automation system automates your whole house, triggering events and routines involving light fixtures, security components and the heating/cooling system based on the time of day, temperature or any other condition that you select. For instance, when a sensor detects a vehicle in your driveway, your home automation system could turn on your lights. An automation system controls a collection of "subsys-tems." A subsystem is a system that—even when operating by itself—provides benefits to a homeowner. Common subsystems include lighting, security, entertainment and heating/cooling systems, as well as devices like motorized drapes and basic appliances. A home automation system puts two or more subsystems under the control of one central controller, so that the press of one button can issue several commands to a variety of different electronic products. A popular example: Pressing an "Away" button on a keypad might arm the security system and set back the thermostat to an energy-saving level. Pressing the "Home" button does the reverse.

Staff Writer, Designtechnica News The shape of the advertising From the ABI Research press release: The shape of the "digital home" of the near future is becoming steadily clearer, according to the latest " The US Digital Home Enterprise: Connected Home Automation " report from ABI Research.
Traditionally the prerogative of the successful hip-hop producer or sports star, home automation — integrating media and entertainment with communications and "smart" household appliances — is nearly ready for a wider market of upper middle-class households.
According to ABI Research principal analyst Erik Michielsen, the biggest factors enabling this transition are the firm commitments to home automation from some of the world's largest technology companies, both individually and as members of standards-setting organizations.
Depending on who's talking, the gateway to the home — the central control hub — is either going to be PC-focused, or based on the television and the set-top-box. Microsoft and HP have teamed up to offer a "Windows Home Concept" suite targeting both media and communication, while Motorola recently announced its "Home Media Architecture", initially more focused on entertainment.
