This page explains how I set up my home automation.
http://james.lipsit.com/home.htm
What can an automated home do? I can remember the first time I walked through Sears and saw this new system to control lights remotely. It was called X-10 and I was probably 12 years old. Over the years I have installed many of these switches throughout the house to turn on lights and appliances from a small console on my nightstand. Five years ago I was introduced to a product that turned my hobby into an obsession. That is HAL 2000. HAL is an operating system for your house. This software works with many "off-the-shelf" home automation products including all of those X-10 devices I already had installed. HAL has many unique features however, the most impressive is its ability to control all of these devices by voice. It does this by use of a very powerful (Speaker Independent) speech recognition engine designed by . "Speaker Independent" means you do not have to train it. Right out of the box it is able to accept your voice commands. Whole House Control In order to command HAL from different rooms in the house, I set up a Open air microphone system. This consists of installing

Home Automation with Mac OS X, Part 1
by Alan Graham When some people hear the words "home automation," they think about the Jetsons or multi-million-dollar concept homes of the future. Others think home automation is just a geek fantasy that wouldn't add any real value to their lives. They would be wrong. Home automation is actually relatively affordable to set up. Anyone with very basic Mac OS X skills can design and program their own system. In this series I'll discuss why to use home automation, what you'll need to set it up, and advanced topics such as home video surveillance and remote administration. And if you happen to be a fan of the Homemade Dot Mac series, we'll tie that in, as well. Why Home Automation?

I often get the response of 'hey, this is just like Bill Gates' house' when friends drop by for a visit at our x10 smart home. My usual reply is 'yes, but on a much smaller scale!'
Nevertheless, even if you don't have several billion dollars to spend, you too can have many of the features that Bill enjoys, at a price that won't be approaching half the annual NASA budget. (click here to get the kit to Automate your home with X10!

For around a hundred bucks (per typical home), you can easily implement a basic system that will do things such as trigger lights by motion detection, turn your coffee pot on in the morning, and control your gas fireplace. You can easily add other functions as your budget permits, including the ability to run your outside (or inside) irrigation, regulate your heating system, detect intruders with wireless video camera surveillance , and run your Jacuzzi tub.

Comfort Intelligent Home Control and Security System
Featuring X-10,Voice Response and Phone Control
Comfort is a home control and security alarm system with extraordinary abilities.
Many homes function around separate systems which work independently from each other, but these can now be integrated into one system, where you can have control from a single keypad or telephone button from anywhere in the world .. The benefits are plenty, now you can be in control and in touch with many aspects of your home and office environments, because integration is the key and Comfort is the system which provides you with integration.
To control the system, you simply enter your code and Comfort will start to talk to you, offering you the choice from a few menu options, such as arming the system or listening to your messages on the answering machine. Comfort can be set to one of five modes, with just one or two key-strokes, such as Away Mode when leaving the house, Night Mode for Bedtime, Day Mode for protecting an area separately or Vacation Mode when going on Holiday so that your lights and curtains operate for a deterrent effect (optional). Other short-cut keys take you to commonly used menus such as setting a reminder message or intercom mode also works with Clipsal CBUS and Honeywell Hometronic and Smartfit.

HVAC
An integral part of any Home Automation System. Simply stated "Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning". These devices include Thermostats with X-10, RS-485, or RS-232 interfaces that allow remote control using X-10 transmitters, Receivers, or Computer Control. A great way to save energy, these thermostats can be controlled from within your home or on the road. Also included are motorized dampers to control air flow, and remote temperature sensors to monitor remote (outdoor) temperature. Combined with X-10 Computer Control, these devices can be "set back" for energy savings any time you leave your home for any length of time. Back to Top
Infrared
Light that is below the spectrum of Human Vision, therefore "invisible". Most modern televisions and Audio Video Appliances (A/V) utilize infrared remote controls to transmit infrared light to a receiver hidden behind the face of the appliance to control, Audio, channel selection, etc. Back to Top
Infrared Connecting Block
A connecting block that can be wall mounted or mounted behind a piece of furniture, and allows for the connection of four or eight infrared emitters via small plug-in jacks. Most connecting blocks also have a plug for an infrared receiver. Signals received by this receiver will in turn be transmitted locally by the emitters, or repeated to other Infrared connecting blocks which can be "chained" or wired together from room to room to "repeat" the infrared signals. Some models of Connecting Blocks are amplified and will allow the connection of many emitters, others are not and typically only handle four emitters. Interfacing to Home Automation is simple; you can turn off all of the televisions in the house when you leave.

  • document.write("print this article")

  • suggest an article Introduction An area I have been interested in for a long time is home automation. Essentially, home automation is the ability to control devices around your house from your PC. For example, if you go away on holidays, you could schedule your PC to rotate your lights on a normal schedule. Turn them all off during the day, then back on in the evening and finally all off again at night. This of course would give the impression that you are at home and potentially thwart robbery attempts. Other examples would be having the coffee pot and toaster automatically begin at 7:00 am and controlling the temperature of your house on a given schedule, etc. I have chosen to focus on one specific home automation product for this article, the X10 Firecracker System. It is an extremely inexpensive and easy-to-use product and will give us the most basic understanding of home automation potential. You will need to purchase and install the hardware to take full advantage of this article. Personally I just hit eBay and grabbed a few of the devices from a few vendors. Usually you can find everything much cheaper than from the X10.com site itself, not to mention not having to deal with X10's ads.

Do you have an HCS system in your house? Do you have a web page setup? If so, drop me a line and I'll add you to my list of HCS users on the web . I've seen a lot of queries on the Circuit Cellar HCS Newsgroup about what others are doing with their systems. Now's your chance to share it! Having been an avid electronics hobbyist since I was a teen, Home Automation is a great hobby. Currently, my wife and I live in the house she grew up in. Its about 75 years old. Not the easiest house to automate, but we plan to completely renovate it this year so lots of the neat parts of my system are 'holding' until we remodel. My current system consists of:
    • HCSII-DX Supervisory Controller PL-Link RS-485 X10 Controller from Circuit Cellar (no longer available - replaced by HCS-PLIX
Currently I control a few lights based on time and outside light. I also control our window AC unit (not temp based yet - just timed). The outside bug zappers also come on at dusk and turn off and dawn. Light input is from a simple solar cell hooked to an SC Analog I/O port. I'll move this to my AMAN Jr weather station when I install it on the roof. Having problems with your PL-Link hanging?

Automating a house without Windows Software Status My motivation for automating my house comes from watching the BBC program "Tommorrows World" on TV as a kid and being in awe of the amazing futuristic houses and gadgets. Being a student for an extended period meant my money had other priorities, but when I moved to a new house at the end of 2001 I was determined to see what home gadgets would actually be useful and make a difference. Many of the existing home automation systems you can buy off the shelf or have installed are proprietary, most only work on Windows. So I decided to make it a spare-time hobby to automate my house in a useful way, on a budget, and to make it fun to do so, whilst making it all run on open source technologies. I wouldn't risk my life (or my home automation) on an instable, expensive OS that I have no control over. Infrastructure
    • 3 CAT5 cables to most rooms in the house. Fortunately the builder ran some extra cables through the house for me before it was too late and the final fix happened. I found some cunning 3-outlet sockets from BKA which look good and blend into a domestic environment.
