The Place for Home Automation Enthusiasts New Board
The message board has been changed to something a bit more modern, I think you'll like it much better! I've again not been updating things often, but well at least I've got that done. I may revisit my garage monstrosity again (that means fix it!). Online music I've got a comparison of online music services on my other site, TechoLiO if you're interested. Somewhat home automation related since maybe you're automating your music collection! Well maybe. X10 Files Chapter 11! Well I'll be danged, X10 is not raking in the dough as much as we may have thought! It's easy to make all those ads if you haven't paid for them. And they have apparently been hit hard by losing a law suit against the company that came up with the pop under ad (that we all love so much). Read the details on cnet right here If they go belly up let's hope a decent company buys the techology and keeps it up. It may be old, but the x10 stuff is pretty good bang for the buck for most of us!

From basic articles to Advanced Tutorials
Don't be fooled by the meagre descriptions,
these are often very detailed and directly useful.
  • Basic tutorial series:
  • Introduction : A very simple introduction to home automation.
Why you would want to have such a system, and a simple way of presenting the problems and joys of having a home servant as a parallel to setting up and maintaining your own home automation system.
  • Two-Way ? What is one-way versus two-way communications ?
Follows on the intro, and should help you understand the difference and the benefits of being able to monitor your home as well as control it.
  • What Things ? Just how much bother is this and how much does it cost ?
Follows on the intro, with pictures and prices of the basic elements. This should show how modular this whole thing is and how easy it is to just add a few new units as you go.
  • Where to Buy This is just a guide to finding X-10 parts.
  • Plug-Ins How you can share systems with other users. This is a pretty basic tutorial about the ins and outs of saving and importing XTension 'plug-ins'. Many of the following tutorials include them.

Books ZigBee Sensor Networks - Wireless Congestion? An interesting quote from a spokesperson for ZenSys, (makers of the Z-Wave home automation system)... "Networks that operate in the 2.4GHz band, such as that offered by Zigbee, will become congested and slow as this frequency is also used by Wi-Fi and other networks" As interest in these wireless technologies increases for the smart home users, it looks like wireless "congestion" is going to be a major issue. Reliable tracking of people as they move around a house would bring great benefits for any home automation system. Interesting, at this years Defcon meeting, hackers showed a passive RFID tag was able to be read from a distance of over 69 feet. Perhaps more passive devices are a better option for the future... I started messing with home automation when I was 12. My first electrical experiment happened when I found a car headlight in the trash. I cut the end off of a household extension cord, hooked up the two wires to the headlight, and plugged it in. That's when I first learned the difference between AC and DC (AC hurts more).
My Office Cam During those teenage years, I continued my adventures by wiring up speakers throughout the house and setting up secret microphones to monitor things like slumber parties (geez, don't tell my sisters). I took the usual electricity and electronics classes in high school, which yielded such things as a florescent desk lamp (the one right here on my desk), a car stereo power booster, and other things like that. Back in the 80s, I impressed my new girlfriend by adding phone jacks to her house and replacing light switches with dimmer switches (oooooh). Of course she married me and now she affectionately calls me the Electro-Wonder-Man (well, okay, I kind of got her to call me that). Over the years, I had heard about X-10 technology, but for some reason I just never got around to trying it out. On Wednesday, June 3, 1998, I plugged in my first X-10 appliance module and from there I was hooked. I've pretty much been a gadget geek all my life and I don't know how I've survived all that time without a daily X-10 fix.
