Emulators for Palm PDAs : An Overview of the Best
Gadgeteer Hands On Review by Henry Kong March 26, 2004
3 years ago, I posted a review at this site: Emulators for Pocket PCs: An Overview of the Best
Liberty was the first Palm emulator - for use with Gameboy cartridges. It was a great effort at that time; I liked it so much that I whipped out this review for it at SPUG.net. Now that the Palm OS is more up to speed with the StrongArm chip, more capable emulators have surfaced and it will be great to have a write up of an overview on them. Above is a screenshot of the icons of some of the Palm emulators that I like. To play these emulators, you will needs game ROMS - get them at PDROMS, your #1 legal ROM Source since 1998. Running an emulator is like having another computer on your Palm, with a library of software thrown in as well. My most favorite Palm emulator is Codejedi's CaSTaway , the Atari ST emulator - and it's free! it has been updated to v0.7.11 which includes full screen 320x480 display, Zodiac compatibility, improved sampled audio playback and other fixes.

Quality microprocessor development tools since 1989. Custom compilers and special features can also be developed for you by Softools. Now - Softools supports online purchases using the fast and secure Paypal service.
Softools, Inc. has the software and hardware tools to meet your needs, help get your project done on time, and at a fraction of the cost of other tools. And supporting this micro-processor family is our total business and not a small portion of a business supporting multiple processors, we know our tools well and that they will meet your goals. Let us prove it to you! We support the Z80, Z180 families, Rabbit 2000/3000 and 8085 families. They make up 100% of our business and they get 100% of our attention and support. Keep this in mind when you consider other vendors who support many or dozens of processors. If 5% of their sales are for the Z80/Z180 family of tools, how much time do you think will be devoted to working with those tools, and to you the user, for technical support?

Emulators for Pocket PCs: An Overview of the Best Article
Gadgeteer Article by Henry Kong March 06, 2001
Game emulators are great fun. It's not only the tons of money that they save you on the purchase price, but that they also bring back retro, classic game play to today's Pocket PCs. On top of these obvious advantages, there are also: No repair bills, no need to hunt for hard-to-get spare parts and no required shelf space.
Emulators have contributed much pleasure to my life, and have motivated me to surf the web for retro games, got me interested in PDAs (the first Palm Pilot came with 4 nice retro games, remember?) and got me to upgrade to the iPAQ, which I feel is the only PDA that does justice to emulators.
This article will focus on several game emulators that are currently running on Pocket PCs at full speed - with sound and all kinds of good stuff. I have used the iPAQ as the benchmark for these programs, since it is the fastest and most compatible Pocket PC currently available. All comments are purely my personal opinions.
The Most Compatible
In my humble opinion

Introduction
NOTE: There are no illegal ROM or disk images on this site. All images on this site are public domain and legal to copy.
An emulator, as far as this page is concerned, is a programme that you run on a computer in order to run programmes written for a different (and incompatible) computer. This is quite a difficult task as the emulator has to look at each instruction in the programme and perform the operation that would occur on the computer being emulated, so you will need a much faster computer to run a programme at the same speed as a 'native' computer. Emulation is slowed down further by having to convert graphics and sound from the original format to a form that can be displayed/heard. All the emulators listed here are top notch, and are well worth a look if you own a fast(ish) PC.
Links
If I haven't put a link in for a particular emulator, you can get to it via these sites, the links at Dave's Classics are at the left of the 'what's new' information on the first page. They are excellent sites and worth a visit: RetroGames Dave's Videogame Classics
Spectrum Computer Emulator
There are quite a few Spectrum emulators for the PC, you don't need a very powerful PC to run most of them (a 486 should do) and emulation is generally very accurate. ZX80 has been about for ages, but I don't think it's that great, it needs a specific memory configuration on your PC which you shouldn't need to worry about nowadays. I haven't tried any of the Windows ones, but X128 is a great DOS em' that also works under '95. The version of X128 I used was V0.8 SAOM which allows you to use 128K games with the enhanced 128K sound.

Playstation emulation has come a long ways since the days of the original PSEmu. Now we can play commercial games like Tekken 3 almost perfectly and with sound, when just a year ago, you would be lucky to get the title screen to show up. On January 5, 1999, Tratax of the PSEmu Pro team made an announcement that he has accepted a job for a game company here in the USA, and will be leaving the PSEmu team in February. While this is sad news for the emulation community, I would like to congratulate Tratax and wish him the best of luck at his new job. Then, not long after Tratax made his announcement, Duddie of the PSEmu Pro team made a public announcement that he is leaving the PSEmu Pro team as it would conflict with his job. Duddie, however, will not be leaving the emulation scene as he said that h e is addicted to it (who isn't :)). The final nail in the coffin for PSEmu Pro was when Kazzuya quit development in order to pursue a new career. That leaves bleem! as the only active PSX emulator left for PC. You can download the demo right here from Emulation Zone. Check out the crippled demo, and spend some money on the full version. :)

Tidied up the Links pages, and I've also started working again on Quazatron , as well as a couple of other little things. I noticed there was a link to the page in 'Retro' - (Edge's special issue dedicated to retro computing) so I guess I should get started again. I've also got a few new remakes and emulators to upload which I'll do in the next few days. 15 May 2002
Updated the Stats page . Well, it's better than nothing. ;) 26 February 2002
Added a few new compilations , all with an adventuring theme, and have a few more to come. Incidently, if you want information about Spectrum adventure games, The Spectrum Adventurer is a great place to look. 25 February 2002
Added another 5 of the Crash Smashes, and also have a few new remakes to add soon. Also, Hungry Horace is on the 'PC Utilities' cover CD this month. OK, there are 1000 other things on there, but still... ;-) 15 February 2002
Um. Things look a bit different around here...
Unless you're a first time visitor, you may have noticed that the site looks a bit different. Please don't be frightened - I just fancied a change. I'm not saying it's better, or worse, just...different.
The main things that have changed are the new drop down menus just up there (*points upwards*) and that the individual games pages have gone, leaving just the search engine. The main reason for that is that they were a huge pain in the arse to update and it was putting me off adding new snapshots. Anyway, everything else should be just as it was, content wise, so have a look around. And if you spot any problems, or have any comments, please

    September 2003
A cornucopia of MIDP emulators reflects the abundance of MIDP devices available. This article surveys the current crop. Although some emulators are designed for demonstrating MIDP applications to prospective users, the emulators in this article are specifically for developers, to help them test applications. Emulators are usually distributed as part of a larger package or development kit. Each of the blocks below shows a particular package, including its name, important links, thumbnail images of each emulator, and a brief description. This is not a complete list but captures the knowledge we have at present. If you'd like to see other emulators here, please let us know. A different list of Java technology device emulators is available here A Few Words About Emulation Emulation is hard to get right. The ideal is to mimic the behavior of a device exactly, but the accuracy of the emulation correlates to the difficulty involved in developing it. The emulator's developers have to decide how accurate to make the emulation based on the time and skill they have. At one end of the spectrum, a vendor may choose to take the J2ME Wireless Toolkit emulator and simply create a new skin for it. I'll talk more about this option later.
