169. The BibTeX Format
Standard LaTex bibliography reference and publication management data format.
BibTeX is a program and file format designed by Oren Patashnik and Leslie Lamport in 1985 for the LaTeX document preparation system. The format is entirely character based, so it can be used by any program (although the standard character set for accents is TeX). It is field (tag) based and the BibTeX program will ignore unknown fields, so it is expandable. It is probably the most common format for bibliographies on the Internet.
Software Support
The BibTeX program uses style files , a list of citations from LaTeX, and a BibTeX database to create a LaTeX file listing the cited references. Dana Jacobsen maintains a list of some BibTeX tools If you're looking for BibTeX for the Mac, Vince Darley has done a port of BibTeX to the Mac bp and BibDB both fully support BibTeX.

iX 1/2001, page 167: XML-Programming XSLT Tutorial I: Basics and first example application
Henning Behme
Translation: Paul Harrison In order to present XML documents or data to the user in an attractive way in browser, mobile phone or PDF format, the original data must first be converted to the necessary formats. This is the purpose of XSLT as part of the style component of XML. I n November 1999, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) issued the XSL transformations, or XSLT for short, as a recommendation - a type of W3C standard. The purpose of this language, written in XML, is to allow webmasters and programmers to take XML data with any desired structure and use them to generate something which the server can supply to the user as an HTML page, a PDF document or in XML form. The processing of XML sources via an XSLT program basically means that the latter uses the source to generate a document tree and converts this to a result tree by executing the instructions specified in the stylesheet. Also in November 1999, the consortium agreed on a language allowing access to parts of a document which was intended for XSLT as well as for XPointer (part of the linking specifications which are not yet available in their final form). This XML Path Language (XPath) describes, in the form of expressions, which elements and attributes are to be selected for processing.

Full text of a paper discussing an 'attack' that threatens both privacy and data integrity. Written by Edward W. Felten, Dirk Balfanz, Drew Dean, and Dan S. Wallach. Available in various formats including PDF and Postscript.
History People Partners Research ... Links Web Spoofing Web Spoofing is a security attack that allows an adversary to observe and modify all web pages sent to the victim's machine, and observe all information entered into forms by the victim. Web Spoofing works on both of the major browsers and is not prevented by "secure" connections. The attacker can observe and modify all web pages and form submissions, even when the browser's "secure connection" indicator is lit. The user sees no indication that anything is wrong. The attack is implemented using JavaScript and Web server plug-ins, and works in two parts. First, the attacker causes a browser window to be created on the victim's machine, with some of the normal status and menu information replaced by identical-looking components supplied by the attacker. Then, the attacker causes all Web pages destined for the victim's machine to be routed through the attacker's server. On the attacker's server, the pages are rewritten in such a way that their appearance does not change at all, but any actions taken by the victim (such as clicking on a link) would be logged by the attacker. In addition, any attempt by the victim to load a new page would cause the newly-loaded page to be routed through the attacker's server, so the attack would continue on the new page. The attack is initiated when the victim visits a malicious Web page, or receives a malicious email message (if the victim uses an HTML-enabled email reader).

Security Considerations Any data compression method involves the reduction of redundancy in the data. Consequently, any corruption of the data is likely to have severe effects and be difficult to correct. Uncompressed text, on the other hand, will probably still be readable despite the presence of some corrupted bytes. It is recommended that systems using this data format provide some means of validating the integrity of the compressed data. See reference [3], for example. 7. 179. Matrix Science - Help - Data File Format
Matrix Science offers the Mascot search engine for rapid protein identification using mass spectrometry data.
Help Data File Format
Data File Format
A Mascot input file is a plain text (ASCII) file. For a Peptide Mass Fingerprint, the file should contain a list of peptide mass values, one per line, optionally followed by white space and a peak area or intensity value. Mascot will ignore any additional values. The peak list formats of a wide range of instrument data systems are directly compatible with these requirements. In addition, Mascot will automatically recognise the following formats: For an MS/MS Ions Search, the data file must contain one or more sets of MS/MS data. In the Mascot generic format , MGF, each MS/MS dataset is a list of pairs of mass and intensity values, delimited by BEGIN IONS and END IONS statements. The following formats are also supported for MS/MS data: A data file may include embedded search parameters . Most embedded parameters can only appear once, at the head of the data file. In a Mascot generic format file, a few parameters can appear within an MS/MS dataset (PEPMASS, TITLE, CHARGE, TOL, TOLU, SEQ, COMP, TAG, ETAG, SCANS, RTINSECONDS). If there is a conflict between the values of the embedded parameters and values entered into search form fields, the embedded parameters always take precedence. The search form fields are essentially defaults for values missing from the data file.
